Plasma screened mounted on playroom wall

northstrandee · 19/03/2014 17:42

To think that my SIL and her husband are utterly crass and stupid to mount a big plasma screen on the wall of their newly built playroom (about ten steps from the living room where there already is a big TV) so that their 20 month and 7 month old children can watch 'their favourite cartoons'.

House is full of noisy toys with flashing lights etc so surely to let children under 2 have non-stop access to a TV is unnecessary and irresponsible.

This has been annoying me for ages because my DS (10 months) sometimes plays there and when I pick him up they say 'Oh, he just loves looking at Peppa Pig.

He's a baby, it's just moving images and noise to him. ARRRRRRHHGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Playroom doesn't mean playroom anyway - it just means room you can shove the kids and their toys in to keep the rest of the house tidier.
I'd love to have a playroom.

YABVU. Mind your own business. Nothing wrong with having a TV in a playroom - encouraging/allowing the kids to watch TV all of the time instead of playing the toys isn't on but nothing wrong with it in moderation.

JabberJabberJay · 20/03/2014 13:12

I think you're being a bit judgy about this OP.

While we can all agree that non stop TV isn't a good idea for small children, merely purchasing a TV doesn't mean this will be the case.

But if you don't like the way she parents, why are you leaving your own baby there? What are you doing whileshe provides free childcare?

KellyElly · 20/03/2014 13:28

Great idea - kids can watch their shit TV while the adults can watch theirs. Ahhh to have a playroom.

Mutley77 · 20/03/2014 13:35

Everyone I know with 2 reception rooms (or more) - including us - has a TV in each, I didn't realise it would be considered odd!!!

My kids never watched much TV at that age (in fact DC1 never watched any before the age of 2) but as they get older they do want to watch it, great separate space for "movie nights" with friends, also a second TV for adults to use if necessary. What's the problem?

daisy0chain · 20/03/2014 15:30

I want a play room with a TV. It would mean never again being subjected to crappy kids tv. Even for just half an hour.

Oh the bliss!

sittingatmydeskagain · 20/03/2014 15:48

Personally, I've always been a bit anti playrooms.Wink

They have bedrooms with toys. Our bookshelves have a mixture of childrens and adults books. Why do they need another whole room?

gamerchick · 20/03/2014 15:56

So there's no toys in bedrooms.

Mines half a sensory room anyway which I can adapt as he grows. His place of peace when he's overwhelmed.

Playrooms are awesome Grin

MaryWestmacott · 20/03/2014 18:17

sittingatmydeskagain - because this way, there's a room for the toys, not all in the bedrooms, not all in the dining room (as our house) it's more of a 'family room' but then you have a separate sitting room for grown ups that's not full of toys. It also means you just shut the door on it (sick of hte nightly picking up of shed loads of lego in DS's room) -no matter how late they've been playing, bedrooms are always tidy and ready for bed time.

I'd love a playroom. DS will not just play quietly in his room, he wants to play downstairs. a space for that would be ideal.

Can't help thinking that the idea of TV watching being governed by how many TVs you have is quite quaint.

Mimishimi · 21/03/2014 06:39

YABU. You sound like one of those people who expects free childcare from friends/relatives and then complains about the quality of care....their house, their business. You don't like it, don't leave your DS there.

Mumof3xx · 21/03/2014 06:41

My elder dc have a small tv on their bedroom wall (we don't have a playroom) however they are 4&6 and only got this very recently.

It's mainly used for computer games and the occasional DVD but isn't on that often

Taffeta · 21/03/2014 06:41

YABU, and a telly snob.

We have a playroom with a telly on the wall. It's on the wall so it doesn't get in the way of all the BOOKS! Ha! What do you make of that, op?

The children (7 & 10) are only usually in there at the weekend, as they are too busy during the week.

I think it will come into its own when they are teens. But we'll see. It's used a lot when we have parties, the children often go in there and watch part of a DVD.

MaryPoppinsBag · 21/03/2014 07:05

YABU
My two have a playroom (spare room upstairs) with a sofa and TV in it. I sometimes sit in it to watch TV.
They are 8 & 5, and we didn't want TV's in their bedrooms. It's one if my favourite rooms. And it's their sanctuary after school when I'm minding other people's children.
