to be dreading the world cup?

I used to enjoy watching England it down the pub with friends, I used to follow my own team, had a general interest in football and what was going on. Not a top hobby/interest of mine but I liked to know. But now, two kids down the line, it is one interest that had to fall by the wayside. I find it boring, its all about the money and egos of the millionaire owners and players. DP says he feels hoodwinked as I came across as a pint drinking lass who liked football. I tell him I have too much to do and other hobbies I have no time for.

DP loves football, loves his own team, but will listen to anything about football at all. He listens to the radio as much as possible. This has been increasing over the years to the extent we listen to football radio on the way to days out, and now, last few days, when getting the kids ready for bed, he has started to listen to football while we get the kids ready for bed. It drives me up the wall. He tells me all about who is where in the table, about players and what they are up to, scores, cups, managers etczzzzz. I couldn't give a toss. I just don't care. At weekends, I'll try turning the radio to another station and he gets irritated and I tell him how would he fancy Jane Austen on the radio all the time?

I just seen the world cup goes on for a whole month. The build up will be fever pitch and then the football will be disappointing. I am dreading it being on the radio and tv all the time. Please tell me I am not alone.

I love the World Cup, it bridges the gap between the end of this football season and the start of the next!!!

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/03/2014 21:57

Only once every four years sooty??! Wink

cerealqueen · 18/03/2014 22:15

The world cup may be once every four years but its just the peak of football dominating sports coverage.

And if I have to hear about the silly money another player is being paid whilst it is on and England fail to make it anywhere near the finals I'll be Angry!

OP posts:
Nocomet · 18/03/2014 22:18

Oh fuck, it crosses the last week of Wimbledon Angry

Radio 5 will be utterly usless it will be 99% stupid football even if tbe matches are late.

Oh well hopefully England won't get far and the whole hateful buisness will go away quickly, as unfortunately DD2 quite likes football.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/03/2014 22:24

Yeah cereal cos there's that European thing too. And then all te different league things. YAWN.

And then all the other sport too! Although the tennis is allowed I like that Wink

MamaPain · 18/03/2014 22:29

Aha the news that it might disrupt the wimbledon coverage has brightened my day. Now that is a sporting event I hate.

Do you know during a previous world cup, my DC got time off school to watch the England matches, 'twas great.

Shame you can't get him a season ticket, I think the arsenal ones have a waiting list anyway. Just be grateful he doesn't have a tattoo like my neighbour; DH froths every time he sees it. As he's an Arsenal fan I shouldn't really be saying anything supportive of him, but what about getting him a football shrine shed (I know someone with one of these) that way you can banish him there during any major football events.

Nocomet · 18/03/2014 22:30

I wouldn't mind if like the Olympics, it was once every 4 years.

I wouldn't even mind if like tennis or golf it was three or four major championships a year, but no it's almost 365 days a year.

Week in week out we have transfer deals, managers being sacked, club owners changing, sponsors changing, injured players, players in court for drunk driving, we are even supposed to be interested in players wives, girlfriends and OW.

I just am not interested.

AnnaLegovah · 18/03/2014 22:31

I love football (as does DH) but hate the bullshit that goes with it. Late kickoffs for England in this tournament will mean pissheads on the street late at night waking everyone up and trashing things. England games just seem to give a small minority the excuse to act like dicks.

Although we're so shite this time around I'm not expecting us to get beyond the group stages. Wink

ComposHat · 18/03/2014 22:40

But the world cup is only four years. If you don't wantto watch Iit, go for a walk, read a book or watch one of the many other channels that don't have football on. Anything but stop being carping killjoys determined to suck the joy from it for those of us who love the world cup.

Even if you don't like football I think it is pretty special that the whole world comes together to watch the same tournament and invest in it emotionally.

comingintomyown · 18/03/2014 22:44

Agree Compos but am still glad to be divorced more than ever during these times !

NuggetofPurestGreen · 18/03/2014 22:48

I think the OP's point is that her DH keeps talking to her about it and won't let her change the radio station etc pso it's harder for her to avoid Compos

And this is a thread for people who don't like it so don't see how we are 'carping on' and sucking the joy out of it. I've never had anyone pay any heed to me anyway when I've complained about it.

caruthers · 18/03/2014 22:54

Absolutely can't wait for the world cup to start.

The flags will be out and the family will be round watching some quality on telly for a change.

Weegiemum · 18/03/2014 22:56

cereal I have worse than zero interest. But I've listened to enough drivel over the years to be able to google make a half educated guess at stuff! Ds knows I don't like it much, he's beyond delighted (to the extent I've heard from two of his friends' mums!!) that I'm taking an interest.

I don't watch much sport - I love athletics (used to run 800 and 1500 for my school, region and uni) and a wee bit tennis. To be fair, ds only watches champions league type stuff as we've banned him from choosing Rangers or Celtic (we live in an area of Glasgow where that could be a very real is due!) and he's decided Barcelona are "his" team. Just launched into the bloody F1 season which is the only sport dh follows.

Thank goodness for a rugby loving dd1!!

AlpacaLypse · 18/03/2014 22:58

BadLad Can't really remember. We'd got through and we were both rat-arsed.

caruthers · 19/03/2014 00:07

I don't know how someone can be dreading something they don't have to watch.
It's like me saying that i'm dreading watching the next royal wedding although I didn't watch the last one or the one before that etc..

Makes no sense.

Nennypops · 19/03/2014 00:12

I'm praying that England are out in the first round. At least that'll reduce some of the hysteria levels a bit.

Ragwort · 19/03/2014 07:58

Agree caruthers - why do people let it bother them so much Confused - just do something else, surely you don't have to be tied to your football loving DH 24/7?

Personally I love watching things like the royal wedding, state funerals, trooping the colour Grin, that sort of thing - my DH has zero interest so he just leaves me to it. What's the big deal?

Patilla · 19/03/2014 08:31

I don't like football because I don't like the obsessiveness of some of the culture around it.

That said, I'm hoping the world cup makes for some quiet shops and play centres!

Pimpf · 19/03/2014 08:44

I feel the same as you op. I loved the World Cup, for me it was when it was in Italy, I figured if you can't beat em, join em and fully embraced the whole thing. I adored the England team, knew all the players etc etc. this carried on for years, I was into it it all more than dh.

But now - can't stand it. Bunch over over paid prima donnas who've won nothing. They whine and complain, they're treated like gods, vastly overpaid. Terrible role models.

Now rugby on the other hand, that I now love!!

BadLad · 19/03/2014 12:24

In fairness, the current lot haven't won any less than the players in Italia 90.

BadLad · 19/03/2014 12:25

And Gazza was hardly an outstanding role model.

AnnaLegovah · 19/03/2014 13:10

That said, I'm hoping the world cup makes for some quiet shops and play centres!

Not likely, since the world cup is in Brazil it means the games are being played in the evening/at night our time. Wink

caruthers · 19/03/2014 14:31

To be suitably angry that the WC is on you've got to stay up late to get a rage on Grin

AnnaLegovah · 19/03/2014 20:02

Although I am fully expecting to see a lot of 'DH stayed up late to watch the football last night and is too tired to help with the kids' type threads caruthers Wink.

Stinklebell · 19/03/2014 20:14

YANBU

I quite liked the World Cup and the Euros back when I could go down the pub, pretend to watch it while getting a bit pissed

I hate it on at home, it's so bloody boring. I just can't bring myself to care
