Not to celebrate the passing of Fred Phelps?

It seems that Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, is on his way out:

Since this news broke, I have heard lots of "I hope he rots in hell" type comments.

Phelps spent a lifetime condemning to hell those whose values were different to his own.

It is ironic that we should fall into the same trap. Will I be sad at his death? No. But I will not celebrate it.

I don't know, I was in a shit mood and I find that I have cheered up immeasurably since I heard the news.

So his passing unlike his life has added to to total joy quota of many lives, so QED his exsistance and demise where not in vain.... Very cloud and all that

I feel a bit hgtg proving the exsistance of god on that deep and profound thought.

YANBU, celebrating his death would make you as bad as he was. Can't bring myself to mourn him though.

It's good that he's dead, because he made the world a much worse place, and continued to do so (unlike say Thatcher, who was head of nothing at her time of death) up to his death.

We can be thankful that his organisation will probably now fade away.

I read this which I thought was interesting.

AgaPanthers · 21/03/2014 00:49

It's not really a defence of him, more of a 'turn the other cheek', don't picket his funeral piece. Which is fair enough really. Still good he is dead.

I won't be actively celebrating. However, I will quietly feel relieved and pleased that such a spewer of hate is no longer among us to inflict his disgusting views.

Fantastic obituary in Time for dear old Fred.

I think there should be a big love bomb picket at his funeral, lots of positive and happy messages about tolerance. Anything else would be perpetuating hate which is what the man was about.

Slippydippysoap · 21/03/2014 13:48

I am glad that he is no longer polluting the world with his vile self.

I would never celebrate anyone's death by being a bastard at their funeral/singing/dancing though.
