To go empty handed to a baby shower?

One of my good friends is having a surprise baby shower next weekend. We've all been asked to bring some food so she doesn't panic about what to feed everyone.

I have a couple of good ideas of what to get her when the baby is born in May, but I can't really afford anything at the moment.

Would it be mean of me to turn up with just a card?

I've been asked to be Godmother to the new baby and I don't want her to think I don't care. I'm so excited and love her and her family to pieces...but I can't bring it up because it's a surprise!

Isn't it a bit off to have a shower for your second baby? I'd go with a made of voucher for something you'd do anyway.

What about your favourite kids book? You could get a lovely one for about 60p in charity shop?

Can't you just explain that your present still come later?

Will come

The whole concept of presents before the baby arrives freaks me out slightly, also I hate the grabby concept.

When did this baby shower idea start in the UK? Is it yet another unwelcome import from .....?

I can't think of anything a pregnant mum would want more than a little book of home made vouchers promising sleepovers for the older DC etc. That's a brilliant, thoughtful gift. Much nicer than bath stuff.
