to put blueberries in a crumble?

Hmmmmmm.. DBIL and DSIL staying. Am making a crumble for pudding tomorrow with fruit I have frozen in freezer. In bag are blueberries, apple, strawberries...possibly a pear. Was going to do a few more bramleys and top with crumble.

But DBIL just made a disparaging remark about a crumble he was once given that was apple and blueberry. So now I am wondering if I am committing some kind of crumble faux pas? Grin

He did then have the grace to blush when I said there were blueberries in the bag of frozen fruit. Hmmmmmmm.

What say you mumsnet? Blueberries or no?

Can I also be the first person to respond with'first world problem'?

I love blueberries so make it with them. They are a power food

Foxsticks · 15/03/2014 20:12

I would, I love blueberries though! I've remembered I have frozen berries in the freezer, do you just chuck the crumble mix on top of them or do you let them thaw first?

SanityClause · 15/03/2014 20:12

Blueberry crumble is lovely. Even with just blueberries, and no other fruit.

If he oesnt like it, he doesn't have to eat it the rude prick.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 15/03/2014 20:13

I would put them in. However I have been known to put pineapple and mango in so feel free to ignore me Grin

EatDessertFirst · 15/03/2014 20:13

An interesting first world problem nonetheless Smile.

I'd use them. Just because picking them out of a mixed bag could be more trouble than its worth.

Goblinchild · 15/03/2014 20:15

We eat this traditional Canadian crumble fairly often

BIL lacks manners and need a social etiquette top-up.

Janethegirl · 15/03/2014 20:15

I love apple and blueberry crumble, so go for it Smile

FrancesNiadova · 15/03/2014 20:16

Yummmmm, I'd prefer proper custard rather than ice-cream with my piece, thank you.
(Oh, if anyone makes any derogatory comments about your home-made pudding, give 'em a slice of Vienetta, that'll fix 'em Grin )

EatDessertFirst · 15/03/2014 20:17

Mmmmm, Vienetta.......

ChocolateSnowflakes · 15/03/2014 20:19

Yum.

AdoraBell · 15/03/2014 20:20

YABU to cook for someone as rude as BIL.

Make the crumble and give him a bog standard yoghurt on the basis that he wouldn't like the crumble as it has blueberries in it.

Enjoy the crumble.

WhispersOfWickedness · 15/03/2014 20:28

I love crumble so fruit of any variety is fine by me Grin

DH says he would prefer crumble if there was no fruit in it at all Hmm

NearTheWindymill · 15/03/2014 20:30

Hmm. Crumble is very sweet and textured and I think it would go better with something more tart like apple, blackberry, rhubarb, etc.. With a blueberry, strawberry mix I think I'd be inclined to put those berries at the bottom of a glass bowl and top with a mixture of berry yoghurt and whipped cream and sprinkle with demerara sugar.

acsec · 15/03/2014 20:35

Put it all in! Any soft fruit can be crumbled. I've made a pear, plum, apple and blueberry crumble before and it was yummy!

namechangesforthehardstuff · 15/03/2014 21:12

Haha! Ianbu! Take that Bil.

I thaw. Not overmuch though - and certainly not precook. In fairness they have brought a lovely homemade almond and apple cake which I am going to scoff now

Do it, it'll be lovely.

I found a bag of frozen mixed berries in the freezer a couple of weeks ago. There wasn't enough for a crumble so I mixed them with some apple.

I also added some porridge oats to the topping. It was so good it was gobbled up really quickly & I had to make another two days later.

Hoppinggreen · 15/03/2014 21:26

I make strawberry crumble ( recipe from mil) and it's lovely if that helps at all.

pointythings · 15/03/2014 21:28

Crumble doesn't have to be sweet, you can adjust the sweetness of the crumble top to complement the fruit you are using. DD1 made a lovely apple/blackberry crumble at school but we only had Pink Lady apples which are quite sweet, so she cut the amount of sugar in the topping. It ended up oaty, nutty and only a little bit sweet, the crumble was lovely.

Anything can go in a crumble as long as there is something in there that holds its texture.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 15/03/2014 22:43

Yum. And blueberries are super healthy food too. I'd love a slice !!!!!

travailtotravel · 15/03/2014 23:10

I resorted to tinned peaches and blueberries for a crumble once. was absolutely lush and is a house fave now!

MusicalEndorphins · 16/03/2014 02:53

BIL wasn't rude, he didn't know when he said that that OP planned on adding blueberries.
I think it would be inconsiderate to make something for a guest knowing that they do not care for it.

HollyWhiteAlwaysWearsAHat · 16/03/2014 03:00

Ordinarily I wouldn't hesitate to stick the blueberries in, or anything else suitable I had to hand if I fancied them. Although they wouldn't be my first choice to go with an apple crumble admittedly. They are better with peaches or other mixed berries/currants.

But if your guest has expressed a dislike for blueberries in his crumble then I think it would be a bit mean and passive aggressive to put them in, don't you?

I doubt he would have said it if he'd had it cooked and put in front of him, I'm sure he'd have just politely eaten it.

helloeverything · 16/03/2014 08:19

The nicest crumble I ever had was peach and blueberry. I didn't much like the sound of it, but it tasted eerily delicious.
