to think someone should not be picking daffodils in public areas that are for everyone to enjoy?

been to a kids party today and on the way there i commented on how nice it is when the suns out and the daff etc are out

on way home someone a young womam was picking a massive bunch

these are the sort of daffs that are in the middle of a village on the side of the road

Too right. They are not for picking. Angry But with Mothers Day in 2 weeks expect to see an increase in this. Sad

The council here have got very hot on this sort of thing. They've even published photos from CCTV cameras in the local paper.

A lot of the pickers would hop on a train and sell them on the streets in the nearest town...or rather they'd go begging and give a daffodil as a 'thank you' for the money.

Correct - they are not for picking, they are Council property (I believe) and therefore she is stealing.

Where I used to live in the UK, we had a few areas that were thickly planted with daffs of various types, and a big council notice telling people that they were not to be picked. I'm sure some people still did - but at least they were aware that they were doing something wrong when they did it.

I don't think i would stop the car and get out to row over the daffs. Maybe honking the horn with an appropriate face/hand gesture. Grin

YANBU Op, I saw a man come out of a pub with his family once, it was roughly midnight and I'd finished work, he not only pulled out flowers from a roadside plant area but the entire bloody roots too >:{
I gave him a right mouthful but he didn't mind as he knows me ... grr.

There was a very heated thread about this last year. Including a lot of moaning about the killjoys who don't understand the great fun there is to be had in nicking stuff.

I'm hazy on the details. I think it was just a lot of arguing because some people think if flowers are there for everyone to 'enjoy,' then it's your right to pick just a few. Or that you shouldn't stop your children doing it because their delicate little souls might be crushed by criticism.

I chased after a young couple this week in the park who'd picked a massive bunch of daffs, apparently as a romantic gesture in the spring sunshine. Was expecting a mouthful but they were actually apologetic and slightly bewildered that it wasn't a pick-your-own flowerbed. I'd already chickened out of berating the ferocious-looking owner of a ferocious-looking dog which took a crap on the path - being stroppy about flowers seemed the easier option for an amateur killjoy. Possibly I need to find a nicer park.

I laugh when I see people picking them cos my dogs piss on them twice a day every day and they aren't the only ones lol

One of my colleagues told me she does this! I was Shock She says she takes a supermarket bag so she can pretend she's bought them.

I tell my kids never ever to pick them, to imagine what it would look like if everyone went and picked a bunch each.

I allow DD to pick wild flowers in the woods, now worried I have done some thing wrong.

But daffodils sound be left to admire or bought

EVeryone who does this seems to think it won't matter, no one will notice - but they forget that they are unlikely to be the only one who is going to do this. Lots of people do it --> no more daffodils!

I used to go to Hampton Court to see the daff fields every year, and took DS1 whenever we were in the UK - he knows full well not to touch them!

HadaBadDay, I think it depends on whether or not it's private land, as to whether or not you can pick them. Wild flowers aren't quite in the same category as daffs, which have been planted specifically by the council.

This drives me nuts.

There are protected bluebell woods near me and they're gorgeous in May, folk travel miles to see it.

The amount of parents who let their precious little fuckers pick them is ridiculous.

There's even signs up saying not to let your dog run through them.
