To think a 3-4 mile walk is too long for a year 1 class?

I have just been informed that DSs school will be visiting a local church as part of their learning. They will be walking there and back. I reckon it is roughly 1.5-2 miles walking distance away.

AIBU to think this is too far for a year 1 class?

I don't, my DD is in reception and regularly walks more than this

Quoteunquote · 13/03/2014 21:00

No.

stargirl1701 · 13/03/2014 21:01

YABU.

littleredsquirrel · 13/03/2014 21:01

They should be fine with a walk that distance. A mile and a half is not far at all really.

PinkPepper · 13/03/2014 21:02

Nope

MeepMeepVrooom · 13/03/2014 21:02

Don't think it's too far at all.

PinkPepper · 13/03/2014 21:02

Oops I mean no it's not too far.

YABU. My kids walk that distance almost every day. They are 6 and 4.

Hulababy · 13/03/2014 21:02

It should be perfectly doable for any child without mobility issues.
They will however whinge about it, from experience - but then they do for half that distance. As staff, we nod and smile, and keep walking!

We have our Y1s and Y2s walk that distance. Perfectly fine imo and ime.

LiberalLibertine · 13/03/2014 21:02

2 there and 2 back does seem a lot, but I reckon my ds (6) could do 1 1/2 while walking with his friends easily enough.

If they have a rest once there that is.

CynicalandSmug · 13/03/2014 21:03

That's no distance at all!

TwoLeftSocks · 13/03/2014 21:03

YABU. That should be fine, especially with a break at the church in the middle.

GreenLandsOfHome · 13/03/2014 21:03

Really?

We regularly go on walks that are 3/4 miles +.

My 6 year old (Year 1) and 3 year old manage it just fine - especially with a bit of a rest in the middle.

1.5 miles to walk takes what? Half an hour?

BertieBotts · 13/03/2014 21:03

It's not bad at all with a break in the middle.

CrohnicallyChanging · 13/03/2014 21:03

Maybe if it was 3-4 miles in one go, but they'll have chance to rest and have a drink etc before walking back- our local church often provides biscuits when we visit with the kids.

As for time taken, it depends on number of roads to cross, we take about half an hour to walk a mile but there are maybe 5 or 6 roads to cross (so each time you stop, wait for the back end if the procession to catch up, teacher checks it's clear, stands in road while children cross, children wait on other side of the road till everyone's across, teacher goes back in place at front of line and continue)

shakinstevenslovechild · 13/03/2014 21:07

Sounds perfectly fine to me. It isn't that far really, especially with a break in the middle.

FreudiansSlipper · 13/03/2014 21:08

yabu

ds (6) will walk (with bouts of running) all day with a few odd breaks, he should be able to he has no health problems

he was able to walk that far not that long after he started walking

though if children are always driven around in a car and do little walking or physical exercise they may struggle which is a sad but that is how it is for some families

Capitola · 13/03/2014 21:09

No, that's fine.

RandomMess · 13/03/2014 21:10

YABU, if your dc is going to struggle to walk that far you need to start upping their daily exercise!

Muppetsbitch · 13/03/2014 21:10

Er my daughter climbed snowdon aged 5. A 3/4 mile walk is ridiculously doable.

bochead · 13/03/2014 21:10

Kids that age without diagnosed mobility issues are expected to be able to walk up to 2 miles to school each day as a matter of course. That's 4 miles per day 5 days a week in all weathers.

School transport doesn't kick in unless a child's school is OVER 2 miles distance from the child's home. At aged 8 a child without any mobility issues should be able to manage a home-school walk of 3 miles.

If you honestly feel it is too much for your child, then perhaps you should get them looked over by the GP. I'm being serious btw, as a neighbours childhood arthritis was missed until the poor kid was in a right old state, (and in considerable daily pain).

pictish · 13/03/2014 21:11

Another no. Don't be soft.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/03/2014 21:14

No, it's fine. Half an hour's walking each way is not going to be grueling for fit children.
