And i liked it! I feel dirty Grin

It doesn't taste like anything ive tasted before.......

A friend recommended it as a non-bloating, low car (no carb) filler.

So i bought a packet pre-cooked and had it with salad, added some stir-fried mushrooms and pepper and it was yummy, after the first three spoonfulls where my face looked like Hmm what the fuck is that! its nice.

So what do you do with yours? keeenwaaaaa

Your friend's intolerance is probably to the gluten in wheat, quinoa is gluten free.

ScarletLady02 · 13/03/2014 19:54

I love it, it's what they Mayan empire was built on apparently.

You can buy it flaked (like oats) and use it in porridge. It's brilliant in veggie food because of the high protein content

Moggy72 · 13/03/2014 19:55

I usually have a Tupperware of quinoa in the fridge. I cook it on a Monday. Heat some when I need it - toss through some pesto. Serve it with steamed broccoli and stir fried prawns. This is a dinner that takes 10 mins max and my DCs love it.

LEMmingaround · 13/03/2014 19:57

I just looked it up, of course you are right - it is high carb! Hmm I wonder if i misheard my friend or if her expensive nutritionist has given her duff information.

Ah, errol, that is probably it - so quinoa isn't necessarily good as part of a low cal diet then?

foreverondiet · 13/03/2014 20:23

It's great, but def not low carb. I like it.

Driveway · 13/03/2014 20:34

I like it, nice with a creamy mushroom sauce.

Delatron · 13/03/2014 20:45

It is good as part of a low-calorie diet. Though I don't really agree with diets or think they work.... it is a very healthy alternative to wheat-based carbs. It is high in protein and fibre which will leave you satisfied for longer therefore less likely to overeat..It has all 8 essential amino acids, it has tons of vitamins and iron...It is has a low glycemic index and is low in calories.

Some of these diets are really questionable.....

Grandemama · 13/03/2014 21:01

It's pronounced Keen-wa as the name comes from Quechua en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quechuan_languages not Spanish.

As for washing, it depends, I remember my mum washing it more than 3 times because it has a bitter taste in its natural state, but I get mine from Holland and Barrett because I am lazy and only rinse it once Grin

It's good and nutritious and all that but it's making poor people even poorer and hungry where is produced www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/jan/16/vegans-stomach-unpalatable-truth-quinoa

WholeNutt · 14/03/2014 00:39

I also love it but have no idea what to do with it, does anyone have any recipes they'd like to share?

NigellasDealer · 14/03/2014 05:32

interesting article grandemama, will stick to roadkill for my protein

Grandemama · 15/03/2014 20:16

Nigella lentils and eggs also have protein. No need for roadkill.

Grandemama · 15/03/2014 20:17

WholeNutt boil it and add sugar and milk, great alternative to porridge/rice pudding.

BumpyGrindy · 15/03/2014 20:22

I make this soup I wouldn't eat the stuff in a stir fry...it's pretty bland but that soup is GORGEOUS!

Littlefish · 15/03/2014 20:24

I put it straight in the bin. It's disgusting stuff!

EarSlaps · 15/03/2014 20:25

I used to make a paella type dish in the rice cooker with quinoa- add prawns, chicken, chorizo, peas, onions, peppers, tomato purée, wine and saffron. Might do that again soon now you've got me thinking of it.

I made some quinoa flour too- I add it into food for my fussy DS for the extra protein ( we'll have it in our pancakes tomorrow morning).

Hippychickster · 15/03/2014 21:21

We LOVE quinoa in this house. Favourite recipe is, cook it in chicken stock, fry some chicken thigh in a pan without fat, add lime juice, coriander and chicken to the quinoa and eat. Absolutely delish!!!!

NigellasDealer · 15/03/2014 22:19

did you know that the demand for quinoa in the UK and USA means that the price has risen fourfold and local people can no longer afford to eat it?
It is then flown halfway around the world .
you would be better off with a nice piece of home reared beefsteak, in terms of 'green' credentials, not to mention flavour!Grin

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 15/03/2014 22:37

Love it in a veggie chili

AdoraBell · 15/03/2014 22:44

I read that Nigella, local people in Peru/Bolivia are becoming less healthy due to replacing the quinoa they no longer have access to with things like pasta, imported cheaply.

CoolaSchmoola · 15/03/2014 22:47

I use it to make tabbouleh.

Doingakatereddy · 15/03/2014 22:51

You're all a bit wrong. Quinoa is deeeeesssgusting.

Blurgh. Blurgh. Blurgh [big sick emotion]

starfishmummy · 15/03/2014 22:54

We had it for the first time this week too. Followed a recipe that sounded good and had a small amount in. Didn't know I was supposed to rinse it though - nothing on the packet instructions.
It was ok except that I was finding bits in my teeth for the rest if the evening.

Didn't notice my poo looking odd though!

LEMmingaround · 15/03/2014 23:22

Nigella - that is really awful Sad makes me wonder if i want to buy it again.
