Or should I not lose a full day's pay for striking?

baxterstockman · 11/03/2014 18:30

We went on strike for a day in November.

I have just had it brought to my attention that I lost a full day's pay for striking, despite the fact I work part time (6 hours per day as opposed to the 7h 30 a full time staff member would work)

I emailed the head of finance who said that 'unfortunately management decided that all staff would lose a full day's pay regardless of their working pattern'.

AIBU to think this is completely unfair - a full day for me is 6 hours!

Whilst it is only a small amount of money that I have lost out on:

a) It is the principle
b) We have to strike for a full day and a half in a few weeks so I will presumably lose out more than other colleagues again.

OP I wish that we were walking out in support of you (I'm police staff). The dismantling of the probation service as we know it is very concerning and not enough people understand what you do to give a shite. Good luck with your action

Thanks

Thanks trufflehunter. The Criminal Justice system is getting a hard time from this mob. Although I guess the same could be said for the NHS, teachers, Fire Service, Local Authorities etc etc

Certainly - we had no courts on Friday as all the defence barristers were striking against legal aid cuts. Unfortunately all the media are interested in is pushing the "fat cat lawyers" lies to their readership rather than exploring the very serious effect that this could have on anyone needing to defend themselves in a criminal court.

baxterstockman · 11/03/2014 19:17

Agree - it is pretty disheartening to go on strike and lose a day's pay (or more in my case!) and get next to no media coverage.

I really believe the public would care a great deal about this if they knew more about it, but it's unlikely to happen with the Tories controlling the media.

Agree you should loos the number of hours pay that you not all work, not a 'stadard day'.

clarinsgirl · 11/03/2014 19:19

YANBU, you should lose an equivalent days pay only. But you should definitely have the money deducted as you took unauthorised leave.

ManateeEquineOHara · 11/03/2014 19:23

Yanbu, I striked recently on a day I usually only work 4 hours and that is what was deducted. Contact your union, good luck on this and whatever the dispute was about.

Lagoonablue · 11/03/2014 19:27

Used to be a probation officer. The changes are terrible. Every sympathy OP.

YoniMatopoeia · 11/03/2014 19:36

The transforming rehab stuff is quite worrying. Especially when you look at the way some of the private companies have behaved in other contracts.

trufflehunterthebadger · 11/03/2014 19:55

The prisons are rammed, probation will become ineffective & profit-driven, the courts are so overbooked that it's taking an average of 18 months for mags trials to actually happen, the CPS have had so much cuts that they are discontinuing cases just because they can't review them in time before trial.

Tough on crime, eh Mr Cameron.

Bartman · 11/03/2014 20:09

Good. You deserve it! Shouldn't have gone on strike should you?

superchick · 11/03/2014 20:12

I am also a probation officer and went on strike in Nov -it was probably made more confusing because it was effectively 2 half days - we walked out at midday on Tues and started back at midday on weds. In my case I don't work on Wednesdays so I only lost 5 hours pay (12.00 - 17.00). My HR department could cope with that so I don't see why your situation is much different.

YANBU

trufflehunterthebadger · 11/03/2014 20:14

Ah at last ! An incisive, intelligent contribution to the discussion Hmm

ilovepicnmix · 11/03/2014 20:17

Speak to the union. I'm a probation officer too.

I don't work on a Tuesday so only lost half a day's wage.

superchick · 11/03/2014 20:17

Bartman you do understand that the TR agenda will mean a reduced service to victims and communities don't you? Who do you think will be keeping an eye on and working to rehabilitate your local burglars and drug dealers?

BackOnlyBriefly · 11/03/2014 20:24

Bartman, I guess you didn't understand what the thread was about then. Maybe get someone to explain it to you.

Mycatistoosexy · 11/03/2014 20:29

Are you salaried?

If so, how many contractual days per week do you work?

StealthPolarBear · 11/03/2014 20:30

Lurking
hope you get it resolved op
bart, you understand that the op should not pay to strike?

Mycatistoosexy · 11/03/2014 20:34

www.gov.uk/if-your-business-faces-industrial-action/strike-pay-and-working-records

This spells it out nice and clear for your payroll department

NearTheWindymill · 11/03/2014 20:35

As others have said if more pay was deducted than you were contracted to work on that day your employers are in breach of contract. Please speak to your union because you are probably not the only person affected and this needs to be resolved.

trilbydoll · 11/03/2014 20:38

I don't understand why this would be difficult for payroll - surely the payroll software would calculate 1 day correctly? They must have input 7.5 hours rather than one day so it is their own fault.

Hope you get someone who understands and it gets resolved asap.

MajorGrinch · 11/03/2014 20:42

they are illegally deducting from your pay

No they're not - strikers don't get paid for being on strike.

It's why there were so many charities and donations during the Miners strikes in the 80's as families were starving.

It's why "scabs" are hated so much, as they're going in to earn money while the strikers are sacrificing their wages to try & get better conditions.

ivykaty44 · 11/03/2014 20:44

major - so why is the OP being docked wages 7 and a half hours when she only works 6 hours per day?

Lilithmoon · 11/03/2014 20:47

Wow what a bright comment Bartman.
OP I hope you get this sorted; thanks for standing up for the Probation Service

PansBigChainring · 11/03/2014 20:47

In one of my jobs I work in a large probation trust - all our part time staff who striked were docked by the hour - we were sent forms to complete this on. Your Finance dept are just being lazy, or inept, but def. illegal.
