There's a shopping centre near my office with a posh furniture store in it called Grange. I popped in to see if they had a particular sofa and the guy in the shop took a call, referring to it as Gronzj (iyswim). I nearly had to leave the shop laughing, it's worse than Cl'aam for Clapham or Saint Reatham for Streatham. AIBU to think this is ridiculously pretentious?

Ha ha ha I remember St Reatham back in the 80's Grin

TwittyMcTwitterson · 10/03/2014 19:55

I don't get it but I'm really intrigued??? Hmm

TwittyMcTwitterson · 10/03/2014 19:56

Oh no wait, as in la graaaange? All posh and that?

lessonsintightropes · 10/03/2014 19:56

Like a fake French accent to try and make it sound posh.

Grin Brilliant.

There's a place in the Midlands called Leamore and some of the locals refer to it as L'amour. That always makes me chuckle too.

WottaTheOdds · 10/03/2014 20:01

And there's St. Ockwell and Batturseeya!

cantdoalgebra · 10/03/2014 20:05

It IS a French furniture company.

And don't forget Saint Evenage for those in Herts.

Mind you, where I'm from we have a chain of shops called Boyes, and pronunciation fluctuates between "boy-ziz" and "boy-ez".

When I lived in Battersea many moons ago, estate agents called it South Chelsea!!

Sorry, kept saying connection failed!

Optimist1 · 10/03/2014 20:33

I don't think we have Target (economical department store) in the UK, but friends in Canada and Australia both refer jokingly to it with a French accent - "tarjay" which cracks me up.

lessonsintightropes · 10/03/2014 20:38

Love visiting tarjay when in the US!

mimsy the Boy-ziz thing is just odd isn't it, some people have always called it that since the 80's, very odd. I think its because we might say Marks-iz for M&S and so Boyes is the same for some reason Confused

TheNewSchmoo · 10/03/2014 20:53

Darj en ham. Someone I met on holiday came from there. Took me ages to work out where they meant.

whattimestea · 10/03/2014 20:56

mimsy I've always called it boy-ziz. I always thought it was a local thing to call it that and only non locals/visitors called it Boy-ez?

Normalisavariantofcrazy · 10/03/2014 21:12

It's like Essex folk taking the piss out of Vange and Pitsea, it's really hard to type the faux posh pronounciation of them but needless to say it's the polar opposite to the actual way of saying it and they really aren't posh areas!

PoppettyPing · 10/03/2014 21:23

Haha my DH is from Grimsby and when we visit, his mum (who loves a good bargain) always says "I've been in Boyes today.."

Shakey1500 · 10/03/2014 21:26

I don't visit Mat-a-lan, I frequent Mat-tar-lan ]grin]

gordyslovesheep · 10/03/2014 21:27

ha we used to refer to Seacombe (run down bit of Merseyside) 'Sea - a - combee' rather than 'sea-com' - but it was more of a piss take than a serious attempt to poshify ourselves!
