Once this child has gone home.

Feel so sorry for her, she is filthy.

I know her mother, tho not well. Just doing her a last minute favour minding the young one.

Her house is filthy. You wouldn't drink a cup of tea there.

I would be surprised if they hadn't noticed. They could have said something already.

She has gone home now with her belly full and her uniform washed and dried.

I know some people might think this is extreme, but have you considered calling Social Services? This is neglect, and if the children are filthy and live in a filthy house, you have to wonder what else goes in behind closed doors.

The kindest thing you can do is to continue having the child in your house; the school will be aware and will have set things in motion, but it is very difficult if the mother is uncooperative. If the child isn't aware she soon will be, from the behaviour of the other children, and she won't have any friends; no one will sit by her. It sounds like unwashed clothes and body, pets and a mother who doesn't notice; smelly, dirty children are very unusual nowadays, and it isn't this poor little girl's fault. If you really wanted to help you could take her swimming, but it's a lot to ask.

ah poor little girl :(

bless her

btw a couple of years ago I knew a child like this

I reported the parents to the nspcc, you can do so anonymously

Sortyourmakeupout · 04/03/2014 21:30

Social services and nspcc seem a bit extreme. But if this is neglect then it's the only action I suppose.

I don't think so

the child is filthy, sorry but to me that = neglect. and sounds like her mum is not coping

in my case the family had a visit from SS and were given a bit of extra support, it could well be all that's needed in this child's case
