I was on the bus the other day and heard a conversation between two mums about one of their children being quite loud and excitable.

One said to the other about her son "he is not usually this HYPO" and I proceeded to bang my head against a brick wall. The word is HYPER, and HYPO is the opposite. FFS who is teaching these people these things.

God help them if they have a child with diabetes.

So AIBU to get irrationally angry about people not knowing that HYPO is the opposite of HYPER.

Yes, because obviously only the woman you're whinging about could possibly think you're stupid for getting angry about this sort of thing. Hmm

SirChenjin · 01/03/2014 11:33

You write the person off immediately as ignorant and uneducated

Oh well - hopefully you did something productive, both for the sake of your blood pressure and their intellectual development, and pointed out their error? Perhaps you could have wrapped up your diatribe by recommending a book that would help "broaden their horizons"?

daisychain01 · 01/03/2014 11:33

You may HBU ifonly but you've got a bloody GSOH, I'll give you that! Smile

KissesBreakingWave · 01/03/2014 11:33

Or maybe the child was being HYPOMANIC? Just a thought.

LEMmingaround · 01/03/2014 11:33

My boss (a vet) used to use hyper for both - :) I only had to pull him up on it once, but i usually knew what he meant.

I didn't ever consiser myself to be superior because he got it wrong.

I can only say pacific though!

Pumpkinpositive · 01/03/2014 11:33

I knew someone who called her daughter 'Lewis'. Odd choice for a girl, thought I. Until she spelt it aloud one day: L-O-I-S.

Confused
LEMmingaround · 01/03/2014 11:34

I don't like to be pedantic OP, but how could you bang your head against a brick wall? you were on a bus!

OwlCapone · 01/03/2014 11:35

As an aside, OP, you do realise that questions should have a question mark after them don't you? As far as I recall, that is covered by the basic free education we receive in this country with no need to broaden your horizons at all.

Fairenuff · 01/03/2014 11:36

I do judge, and write the person off immediately as ignorant and uneducated

Wow, that has to be one of the most ignorant statements I have seen on mn for quite some time.

You do know that a lack of education is not always the fault of the child, don't you OP?

Some children miss a lot of education through illness or family circumstances, even neglect. They deserve our compassion and support, not to be 'written off'.

Floggingmolly · 01/03/2014 11:37

One person didn't know the difference, op, not people in general. It's not a particularly common phenomenon, is it? Confused

XiCi · 01/03/2014 11:39

Maybe if you had a higher level of intelligence yourself you'd realise that hypo is a commonly used abbreviation of hyper in alot of places. It may not be the correct use of the word but it is very frequently used.

ShatnersBassoon · 01/03/2014 11:42

I'm embarrassed for you, op. Someone's inconsequential error made you feel so superior that you're still enjoying the feeling days later Confused

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 01/03/2014 11:42

oh yes - she was talking about hypomania

i have written you off as ignorant and uneducated

IfOnlyThingsWereSimpler · 01/03/2014 11:44

I'm being tongue in cheek with some of my comments but it does annoy me.

Thanks nancy that was funny.

Haha owlcapone knew I'd make a mistake.

That's already been covered LEM, it was figurative. Never apologise for being pedantic, it is the only way to be.

OP posts:
bellablot · 01/03/2014 11:53

Haha sorry but YABU as there are many people in the world like this and if you bang your head against the wall with every ludicrous comment you hear you're going to give yourself a headache, very quickly!

LEMmingaround · 01/03/2014 11:56

Which comments were tongue in cheek then, the ones where you called the plebs on the bus stupid?

OwlCapone · 01/03/2014 12:02

Never make a pedant post without thoroughly checking your thread title and OP.

Pumpkinpositive · 01/03/2014 12:03

I hope you're not over 30, IfOnly.

You'll remember what our late, great erstwhile prime minister said about those who travel on buses after such an advanced age. Grin

IfOnlyThingsWereSimpler · 01/03/2014 12:09

No I'm not pumpkin. I'm 24.

That was me on the bus love. Wanna make something ovvit?

LEMmingaround · 01/03/2014 12:23

Corus, i have often thought exactly this!

OP - you were a mere baby, when you get older you'll realise that these things, unless written by a medical professional and likely to affect diagnosis, really don't matter. can you tell i have a DD your age?

Gruntfuttock · 01/03/2014 12:29

You know David Mitchell in that video Nancy posted?

That's me that is.
