to think a school admin job is a hard thing to get...

... if you have no school experience?

I have just been offered a part time job in a school which would be amazing for me because of the locality and the hours. A colleague has suggested that they are 10 a penny and that I will easily be offered something better in a school in the next few months if I stick it out and wait (we are all being made redundant)

I had no school experience but vast admin experience and am really happy to be offered it. I think she's underestimating how hard it is to get this kind of job given the market at the moment, and I should snap it up before someone else does. AIBU?

Our school admin staff have all been there for over 20 years each. We get approximately 200 resumes every year for soliciting of (non existant) positions. Take it while you can!

Take it - they are like gold dust. Also schools are one of the worst for nepotism - these posts are nearly always on recommendations from friends. Also once you are in the LA again, it is contacts you have made in different schools that will let you move about and get promotion.

Is your friend's point that by quitting now you're losing your forthcoming redundancy payment? In that case obviously it's worth considering, but unless it's going to be unusually generous I still wouldn't wait.

I don't get a redundancy payment, I'm a contractor so will just get my notice when it all winds down.

I think she thinks I can do better wage wise, but she said all this without really asking about the position or the wage. Its certainly not dead end, its a very varied role which I think I will enjoy. She just instantly assumed it must be rubbish and something better would come along!

I'm going out with my friend who has a school age child tonight and I think she will give me the positive reaction that I was hoping for (and which I've had from you all, who recognise it IS a good job!) Smile

it's a fantastic job but very hard work-our school would fall apart without our admin officer, she manages to juggle 101 different balls, the same number of parents as well as teachers who amble in and ask for ridiculous things straight away ( I know, I'm one of them!) and anyone who can manage to deal with 4 year olds who just want to show her pictures they have drawn that day, sewage treatment officers who need access to the waste tank and the local vicar who wants a piece for the parish magazine all at the same time as trying to input data on a system designed by morons deserves much more pay than they get! Good luck and enjoy!!
