To be worried because I emailed a screenshot of my bank details and balance to a business

I had to email a screenshot to confirm online payment to a business.
After I pressed the send button, I realised that I should have done something to cover up my bank details. Now someone in that business has on her email my name, bank sort code/account no. and balance....which, fingers crossed they will not be abusing and should disappear into an email black hole...I have tried to recall the unread message (still waiting to see if it is a success) and also transferred the balance to a different account already as a precaution.
Should I still be worried? What's the worst that can happen?

I don't think they will be able to do anything with a bank account number and sort code. I have those details of various people that I pay money to.

All they can do with that information is pay money IN.

You're not in Nigeria, by any remote chance? (Remember that online scam?)

BraveMerida · 27/02/2014 05:41

Not in Nigeria, no....but cyber space is cyber space...

Unless you have given them your signature, and answers to those security questions, or password and user id for internet banking, you'll be fine.

Recalling an email usually doesn't 'suck' it out of the recipient 's inbox and leave them none the wiser - it usually just sends a second email asking the recipient to disregard the email they just received. That is, unless you have a program installed that delays dispatch for a set period?

Have you got a cheque book? If you look at it, you'll see your account details on there. It's not a big deal giving it to someone.

As far as the balance is concerned, it's more of a worry if you think it will be gossip to any employees you might know, especially if you have a large amount of money.

I wouldn't worry about it. The main number to protect is a credit card as it can be used by others to "steal" from you.

Cheques have account name, number and sort code. And they are meant for giving to other pro

....people!

Call your bank and ask for advice.

As others say those details can only be used to pay money in. Many businesses, including my own , have these printed on invoices as it's far simpler for us if you pay the money straight into our accounts than send a cheque which we have to process and which might bounce.
