to think this is NOT an unhealthy lunch

DStS's teacher (he is in Junior school) pulled me aside after school to say his lunch was deemed 'an unhealthy lunch' and their first step was to give me a 'verbal warning' before writing to me. She even said 'I'm sure you can understand why we think this.'

This is what he had -

  • Small pot of home made hummus
  • Large wholemeal pitta cut into strips
  • A hardboiled egg
  • A handful of celery sticks
  • A handful of carrot sticks
  • A small pot of raisins
  • Matchbox sized lump of chedder (which he saved to eat on the way home)
  • Satusuma
  • Small yoghurt

We've given him sandwiches and he never touches them but dippy types of food are always eaten and he reports how much he enjoys them. He isn't messy, almost to a fault, so I can't see them being bothered about a 'bits and bobs' lunch making a mess.

Is this unhealthy? I am racking my mind to figure out how on earth this is unhealthy? She wouldn't specify, I expect because it wasn't her who saw his lunch but rather it was reported back via lunch time staff.
I feel really annoyed to be told off by the teacher, she was pretty sneery and it wasn't until I got home I realised I should have asked to speak to the head.

BLT thread - a meeting was had, but no final outcome.

northlight · 24/02/2014 21:06

Of course I had to Google dragon butter. Shock Wink

mrscog · 24/02/2014 21:07

Sorry but I'm marking my place too!

DinahLady · 24/02/2014 21:08

But I wouldn't advise the OP to go in all guns blazing as some have suggested.

No, definitely don't go in all guns blazing. As I said, If it was me, I'd just be polite. I'd say something like:
"I'm really sorry I had to rush off yesterday, but I've got more time this morning and can speak to you properly now.
Please can you clarify for me what exactly it is that was a problem in the lunchbox, as I've thought it over and for the life of me can't think what is in there that is unhealthy - can you shed some light on it?"
Then wait to see what her answer is. NO FECKING WAY would I be taking a verbal warning over a lunch box Hmm with what's in the one you've described lightly.
If it had contained nothing but cold leftover chips from last night's takeaway, a soggy and cold Maccy D's and a Fruit Shoot I could see her point.
With your lunch, though? Nah, not so much.

I was waiting for the stupid dinner ladies comments to start

Maybe see what the teacher says first, I must say I am very curious

RufusTheReindeer · 24/02/2014 21:10

Sorry north

I've not googled it myself...too afraid!

bitofashocknc · 24/02/2014 21:12

Sorry - haven't read the middle bit as suddenly had a brainwave whilst mulling this over in the kitchen (obvs have nothing else to think about)- is it possible someone mistook the hummus for something else? Like a chocolate/butterscotch mousse type thing?

This must be a mix up surely. Can you make lunch for me too? sounds yummy and very healthy (and a very suitable amount of protein!).

Looking forward to the update tomorrow.
What were they planning to do with the warning - do you get put on detention? I'm interested to see what the punishment is if you continue to fail to meet their healthy diet requirement!

breatheslowly · 24/02/2014 21:14

Wouldn't they ask what it was, rather than assuming it to be some sort of mousse?

littledrummergirl · 24/02/2014 21:14

Pigbin pick mine! Sandwiches, crisps, chocolate biscuit. I used to put an apple in mon and take it out fri but now I cant be arsed. At least they eat their lunches now.

breatheslowly · 24/02/2014 21:15

I'd have thought that teachers have enough to do without disciplining parents.

PepeLePew · 24/02/2014 21:16

I am in awe of the pass the parcel pepperoni! That is bloody genius. Next birthday party it's going to be pepperoni, mini cheeses and bags of carrot sticks all the way.

breatheslowly · 24/02/2014 21:22

I'm not sure that my DD would respond well to finding a pepperoni in a pass the parcel.

WheelieBinThief · 24/02/2014 21:24

absolutely marking place- a verbal warning? unbelievable!

PepeLePew · 24/02/2014 21:25

What about a mini cheese, breatheslowly?

backwardpossom · 24/02/2014 21:28

Verbal warning. Actual LOL.

breatheslowly · 24/02/2014 21:29

A chunk of mature cheddar would go down well. A babybel would get unwrapped for the novelty of the wrapping but the first bite would be spat out and handed to me. DD isn't offered babybels any more. She is only 3 so I am still working on her manners.

Caitlin17 · 24/02/2014 21:31

Or maybe she thought it was so healthy it wouldn't be eaten and therefore not healthy at all?

If you had given it to me the egg, wholemeal pitta and raisins would have gone straight into the bin.

splasheeny · 24/02/2014 21:32

That sounds like a great lunch. I'm also looking forward to hearing how it was unhealthy.

LynetteScavo · 24/02/2014 21:33

My other DS had a peperami in his as he won it in pass the parcel at weekend birthday party.

Oh, that needs a whole thread in it'self! Grin

katese11 · 24/02/2014 21:35

Absolute madness! Not even shop bought houmous or white bread! (Neither of which I have a problem with...)
