to still want to slap this woman?

A few years ago I was out with a bunch of friends and a few other women I didn't know, who all seemed to be in their own little group. They all seemed lovely, although the group I didn't know were decidedly orange tanned.
Then one of them made a beeline for me, not even a 'hello' or introduction, and comes out with "Wow! You could be really pretty if you had a tan!"

Cue laughing from the rest of us (especially seeing as with my very pale skin and very ginger hair I'd look a bit ridiculous) and it became a bit of a long-running joke over the years between my friends and I.

Walking down the street the other day and this woman marches straight up to me and with a sympathetic concerned look says "Oh, you really need a bit of bronzer or something darling, you're so pale I thought you had cancer!" I was so shocked and Confused that she'd walked off before I had a chance to reply or even register it was the same woman from a couple years ago.

AIBU to want to hose down this Oompa Loompa and slap the rest of the orange off her face whilst screaming "STFU YOU STUPID BITCH"?

That's bonkers behaviour!

nennypops · 23/02/2014 22:16

I'm wondering whether she's in the tanning business. She does seem a bit obsessive about it.

Supercosy · 23/02/2014 22:20

Blimey.....that is so weird! I really think she might have mental health issues since that is a very unusual thing to say to someone. Don't blame you for feeling pissed off though, not at all, so would I!

Pale and Interesting , Tanned and Tedious Wink

AbbeyBartlet · 23/02/2014 23:12

That is appalling! What a strange thing to say to someone, particularly twice!! I have nothin against fake tan if that is what you like but to comment like that is appalling. Perhaps she is jealous of your colouring!

BankWadger · 23/02/2014 23:24

Everytime I get my haircut I have to make a massive effort not to stare open mouthed at the receptionist as she has so much fake tan on she looks like she'sbeen rolling in mud. I seriously want to ask her if she wants to be African (and tell her with her European facial features to give up and just be pasty white). Honestly orange would be a more natural fake tan colour.

NinjaBunny · 23/02/2014 23:32

90% of 'tanned' people just look like they need a bloody good wash.

It looks really smeary and grubby. Not all of the time, but a lot of the time.

I'm very pale (Russian) and don't tan at all. I can go out with no suncream and nothing happens to me, I stay white.

I've not been told 'I should get a tan' (it would look ridiculous) but if I did I'd be honest about how I think they really look. And I work in healthcare so looking clean is necessary.

FoxesRevenge · 24/02/2014 00:28

Seriously? Hmm

RonaldMcDonald · 24/02/2014 00:34

maybe you should just use a bit of tan

ahlahktuhflomp · 24/02/2014 00:45

Fake tan is fucking revolting, even men who gravitate towards it (because let's be honest nobody else does) are attracted to its implications, not the fact it makes you looklike bloody Morph off Hart Attack.

PatrickStarisabadbellend · 24/02/2014 01:01

I get called pale Gail and I'm always asked if I'm ill. I'm not all that pale either.
