Dh and I dread one thing when we see my mum. Her use of the word 'really' for pretty much anything. I'm really sorry to swear but it does my fucking head in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a one word response too. It's not used to say something is 'really great' or 'I really love that jacket'. It's the tone she says it in too. Sort of a whine; if dh or anyone makes a joke or says something that is meant to be slightly humorous, her answer is 'really?' I wish I could have a 'really' had for when we see her just so she could see how much she uses that 6 letter word!!!!!!!!!!

Probably doesn't help I'm 36 weeks pregnant too Hmm

Did you find it annoying before you met your DH? I find it interesting that since you got together he has trained you out of all your bad habits.

Does your DH (and you) think he is better than you/your family? Just how it came across a bit.

My SD does that. I HATE IT.

It's said in an "omg" "are you serious" way and makes us feel really stupid.

MardyBra · 23/02/2014 12:03

I feel sorry for your mum. If it's that bad, have a quiet sympathetic word. She's probably not being deliberately annoying.

No more than you are trying to annoy with overuse of exclamation marks, apologising for swearing and a txtspk user name.

My mum's stock answer for many conversations;
" well they will, won't they?" (in response to something the children/ a person has done) ' or,
" well it will, won't it" ( response for a situation/ inanimate object).
Drives us barmy, have made a joke about it to her, still does it!

My Mum does 'really?' as well, in an I'm not really interested in what you are saying kind if way.

My mother says "we always do"- even if it was only her and she did it once

My best friend went through a phase of saying "you must..." until I stopped her and asked what would exactly happen if I didn't?

Another friend says "to be fair" all the sodding time and her husband says "as it were" and it's impossible to come back from spending any time with them without also saying to be fair, as it were.

The other one that drives me batshit...

"You know what you want to do, don't you..."

I have a feeling you're about to tell me Angry Angry Angry
