to think this is a weird way to run a business?

I went out last night on a leaving do. The drinks were flowing.

We (group of 30+) went to the only nightclub in town. We were literally the only people in there all night, it was a ghost town but we were having fun.

They had huge banners up advertising 5 shots for a tenner. So as a group we ordered 30 and lined up at the bar to do a Mexican wave of shots. All very childish but good fun.

The guy whose do it was did his shot and then ran off to the loo to be sick. Now, I'm not saying that was brilliant, but. The bouncers were on him immediately, and told him to leave.

We explained to the bouncer this if he left we would all be leaving ( dand as I said, we were the only people in there all night) and the bouncer just shrugged. The manager said he wouldn't undermine his staffs decision.

So we all left, leaving the place completely customerless, and went to another pub. Most of the pubs in town are open late anyway, the only draw of the expensive nightclub is the dance floor.

Aibu to think this is a batshit way to run a business? The reason it's empty is because you have to pay to get in, and we were only in there as a nostalgic throwback to when it was the only place to go.

Surely selling cheap shots and then chucking people out for vomitting (none of us were horribly smashed btw ) is counterintuitive?

Are you serious?

Your friend was thrown out of a bar for being sick through alcohol, and you think the bouncers were in the wrong?

Hilarious.

It's illegal to be drunk on a licensed premises.
It's illegal to serve alcohol to someone who is drunk.
It is illegal to purchase alcohol for someone who is drunk.

So really, they only had one option, by law, and they followed it. Your group were the ones in the wrong.

You also put the staff at the next place you went to at risk with your behaviour.

By all means go out and be silly, I'm sure it was fun. But you surely must know that your behaviour wasn't actually okay or right, don't you?

ToddlerHoover · 22/02/2014 10:01

But it's the combination of a promotion offering cheap shots when you buy 5 at a time and then being completely draconian about someone being neatly sick in the loo that gets me.

It's their club, they can run it how they like. I just think it's bizarre.

Ahh the group of 30/40 yr old on a works do. Every bars favourite customer.... Not surprised they chased you out tbh

curiousuze · 22/02/2014 10:04

Alpaca, the op says 'the drinks were flowing' before they started the shots. So maybe they weren't as sober as they claim! But everywhere (pub or club) I've worked does chuck you out for vomiting. Arguing with bouncers never works either...believe me I've tried :)

Maybe the place gets busy after the pubs close so they weren't too bothered.

DaenerysTargaryensDragonBaby · 22/02/2014 10:04

It's hardly draconian.

He was sick in the toilets! You can't possibly expect him to be allowed to stay in the premises after that. Really?

derek those kind of clubs exist, of course they do.

I wouldn't want to go to one like that. I'm not sure any reasonable person would.

ToddlerHoover · 22/02/2014 10:10

The pubs all close late as well, open until 2, same as the club. It's famously empty all the time, it was part of the attraction for us tbh.

I don't think it will stay open much longer, not for chucking us drunken reprobates out but because people arent interested in paying six quid to get in and then inflated bar prices (other than the promotional shots) when there are a dozen free pubs to go to.

Is it a student bar then, that does it's main training during the week rather than weekends?

DaenerysTargaryensDragonBaby · 22/02/2014 10:12

Trading not training.

Sounds like you had a good night anyway Toddler! I haven't had a night out like that for years - think people I work with are too uptight sensible for Mexican waves of shots

DaenerysTargaryensDragonBaby · 22/02/2014 10:16

derek it doesn't exactly attract the highest calibre of clientele. But, each to their own, it wouldn't be for me.

People may feel like being drunk in a club is normal, but the fact remains that it is against the law, so being asked to leave because you are suspected of being so isn't bad business, it's following the law.

ToddlerHoover · 22/02/2014 10:18

No, as far as I know they only open at weekends.

They would have made maybe £300 quid from us. There were four or five members of staff, plus the dj and all the other costs of opening. I genuinely dont understand how they stay in business.

wonderingsoul · 22/02/2014 10:19

i dont thin yuba for thinking it was a stupied choiuce on their part. but i do see that the bouner was only following the rules.

but so glad you all left together, it was the right thing to do, not to leave your friend on their own.

we have two very very busy night clbs in our small town and the bouncher would speack to the person in questuion and would be able to judge weather if it was becasue they was tooo drunk or if it was just becasue it was a foul shot.. which i think is the best way to do it really.

ToddlerHoover · 22/02/2014 10:20

It was a fab night out, but that's it for me for a while. I'm too old and tired for gallivanting.

Toddler

Either they are a front for an illigitemate business, or they are open during the week for student nights. Either plausible, and either way they probably didn't care about your £300.

How cheap was it if 30 people were only spending £300?!

Sounds like you all had a great night anyway. I haven't had a big night out like this in a while, I think I'm due for one soon.

I remember being sick after a shot once, I think it was a 'slippery nipple' or something. It was the consistency of slimy snot and as soon as it was in my mouth it made me heave. Ah happy memories Grin

ToddlerHoover · 22/02/2014 10:31

Well, maybe maths isn't my strong point. Six quid to get in, one rod of drinks, one round of shots.

Not much profit in it. We were only in there for about 45 mins.

Could be a gangland front. That's the rumour I'm starting, anyway...

OP posts:
YellowDinosaur · 22/02/2014 10:38

I'd actually be more likely to vomit after a shot if I was sober than drunk. Especially if it was tequila.

I love how sanctimonious people are getting about the op and her friends daring to be a bit pissed in a nightclub. That does 5 shots for a tenner. They were very happy to sell them 30 of these shots but 30 seconds later one of them is too pissed to be allowed to stay? As if alcohol affects you that quickly!

Admittedly it's been a while since I've been in a nightclub but they're hardly well known for the sobriety of their clientele. The bouncer needs a bit of training in how to spot the difference between someone reacting to a grim shot (not a big deal) and being too pissed (deserves to be chucked out). And about application of common sense rather than 'computer says no'. Imho.

AnnabelleLee · 22/02/2014 11:01

Bloody hell, bet some of you are fun on a night out. Hmm

BobFlemming · 22/02/2014 12:54

YANBU. It's a nightclub not a church social.
