AIBU?

to think that DD1 should be allowed to read whatever book she likes while on her break at work?

DD1 (21) has just told me she was asked into the office at work today as a complaint had been made against her.

She initially assumed that it had been to do with her work but learned that two women had actually complained that they were offended by the book she had been seen reading while on her lunch break.

The book was 'Porno' by Irvine Welsh - I have not read the book myself therefore cannot judge whether it is offensive or not.

DD said that she was really into the book at the moment and offered to put a cover over the book so that no one could see what she was reading.

She was told no and must show more sensitivity to the womens' religion and must not bring the book into work again.

She is a little shaken up by this incident as nothing like this has ever happened to anyone else and people actually read The Sun and The Mail during their breaks with no problem.

I have told her that she should be allowed to read whatever she wants on her unpaid break but AIBU?

Porno isn't availabe in Amazon's Kindle store in English, you can buy it in German and Italian, but not English.

The people who complained are typical of the petty tyrants who are offended by something they haven't read. Religious belief shouldn't be respected, it would be a better world if it was mocked out of existence. And DD wasn't circulating it, she was only reading the book. If someone junior under my management didn't stand up for your daughter in a situation like this, I'd give him a warning about his behaviour. Bloody religion.

So using the example I gave do you think it is OK for some "blokes" to make young female colleagues uncomfortable with their calendars? Or should women just shut up and accept them?

Honestly, I'd have laughed in my managers face and told him to fuck off!

No one will tell me what I can & cannot read!

Go to work tomorrow with fifty shades of grey, if they complain then you know they know what the book is about! Otherwise the cover wouldn't tell you nothing!

Muslims are offended each and everyday, when women step out of their houses with their faces showing....they are also offended due to PDA....honestly it's all bullcrap!

Tell your daughter to find a new job, I couldn't work there after that.

It's a good book, I agree.

I have vivid memories of being on the train, trying to discreetly position it upright so that the title couldn't be seen. The fuchsia jacket cover didn't really help in that respect.

Hopefully the matter was peaceably resolved back in the heady days of 2014.

If a member of staff told a manager to fuck off they would likely be dismissed for gross misconduct.

Well that would have got you sacked, even back in 2014

She is not unreasonable if it's not porn. I always read on a kindle as it's easier and nobody judges my extensive rude book collection

Could it be your DD is being discriminated against on the grounds of religion? That's unlawful. Do other people read in their break time? If so, what do they read?

It might be worthwhile checking it out, this looks like a good place to start: Equality Act 2010

I'm sure it was sorted out 3 years ago Wink

Because a book called Porno is definitely the same as actual soft porn.

The cover sounds as if its as offensive to some people as a young woman in a bikini.

I know it's a zombie thread but Meridien, amazon (and probably everybody else) is selling it now under the name T2 Trainspotting. It says "previously published as Porno" on the cover - if it were T2 to begin with, this thread would never had happened. Grin

Yes, I'm sure inflatable sex dolls everywhere would be most uncomfortable to be objectified like that in a professional environment.

They probably thought she was reading porn so I can see why it would be offensive to many, but a cover should be an acceptable compromise.

She could change the title to 'Mormons' with a marker pen.

While at uni, me and my now hubby ( not mumsnet lingo but I really hate saying dh, too American for me - hope I've not offended anyone!) were out for a meal with some of my year group. A conversation started about films that were must see and we did the usual 'spinal tap, withnail & I ' etc. Then my hubby mentioned ' the holy grail' to which one of the biology lecturers on a different table flung his head round and got all offended that it was against his catholic faith. Really made a meal of it.
Fast forward twenty odd years, same man is now divorced and the stepson he took on, he won't see anymore. Will see his two biological children but refuses to see the ss. How's that for catholic faith!
