To wonder what my mum was playing at to give me Ribena as a baby?

Mum asked me if I gave my 3 month old any Ribena in a comforter type dummy??? She used to do that for me!! Apparently there was baby Ribena about 30 years ago!
What other ideas from the past so you know of that would never be done now?

What? No drop of rum in your Ribena OP? YANBU, your DM was not a respectable 80s mum at all.

curlyclaz13 · 19/02/2014 21:25

I was left in the pub at two weeks old (with parents friends) while mum and dad shopped, apparently dipping my dummy in beer was acceptable !

DS2 is nearly 3 and has been drinking tea since he was 1. I make it milky and weak and very little sugar. Perhaps 2 or 3 times a week, usually while im having tea myself. He loves it. His health, weight and teeth are fine. I really don't see the big deal as long as generally the child's diet is good.

We had calpol as kids, it was in a squarish, flat bottle. I am earlt 40s so it has been around a while. We definitely had junior disprin.

I also remember rosehip syrup, gripe water (delicious!) and ribena but we didn't have them often My mum was concerned that we had good teeth. We had daily fluoride tablets which I 'm sure helped.

We had an estate car and remember travelling in the back when friends were staying. Four adults and four kids in a brown estate car Shock.

quirkychick · 19/02/2014 22:22

early obviously

JockTamsonsBairns · 20/02/2014 08:44

Purple - nobody would be ringing SS on account of you giving your DC Calpol for pain relief. You might even be well advised to give it before he gets to the stage of chewing his hand off and with awful nappy rash! The point I was making about giving Phenergan was that it contains a sedative, and was sometimes given to babies to help them sleep through the night, not because they were ill in any way. Calpol doesn't contain any such sedative.

My husband is in his early 50s. He was born at home and was sickly and weak, so the midwife/district nurse gave him a teaspoonful of brandy! There's a photo of him at 3 months and he looks like Desperate Dan - chunky and macho!

rallytog1 · 20/02/2014 11:33

The doctor told my mum to put whiskey in my 6-week-old brother's bottle to help him sleep. Naturally, she followed doctor's orders!

brettgirl2 · 20/02/2014 11:38

nowt wrong with ribena, although bottles no and 3 months too young for me. ...

mummywithsmiles · 20/02/2014 11:52

I was born 1992. I was allowed choc when I wanted ate McDonalds a lot ...juice and fizzy drinks.packed lunch was always sandwich, crisps choc and biscuit. Tea in bottle. I'm 22 teeth are fine and bmi is fine.

oldwomaninashoe · 20/02/2014 12:05

My kids were all born in the 80's I never gave them Ribena because it stained their clothes, in the early 80's all fruit squashes had colouring in them.
Baby Ribena tasted vile and although it had no added colouring it still left a nasty mark on clothing.

Aged six, I used to run errands to the shop for our neighbour and my dad to buy fags and tobacco.

Woodbines untipped (I can't remember if there were 20 in a packet), and an ounce of Erinmore mixture that came in a tin. That was back in the 60s but I can remember the smell still.

BertieBottsJustGotMarried · 20/02/2014 13:40

Oh wow, I remember the flat bottles of calpol. Had totally forgotten that. The baby on the baby one looked like my sister Grin I remember being really disappointed that the 6 plus one was orange flavoured because I preferred the strawberry.

LucyLasticBand · 20/02/2014 13:46

ribena has always been too expensive to buy imo.
it is nice though, or was

LucyLasticBand · 20/02/2014 13:47

i had lucozade as a child when i was ill.

LucyLasticBand · 20/02/2014 13:48

i also had carnation milk as a baby, i was quite chubby

squoosh · 20/02/2014 14:02

Oh I bloody adored rosehip syrup. Liga C was the brand we had. Mmmmmmm.

BertieBottsJustGotMarried · 20/02/2014 14:06

I've just read that the alcohol was only taken out of gripe water in 1990! Shock I thought it was much earlier than that!

My nana used to smoke. I remember one New Year's Eve when she was baby sitting. I must have been between 7 or 8. She let me have a puff of her cigarette and a small glass of sherry to see the new year in Shock.

My nana was looking after a friends baby. Baby was maybe 6 months old at the most and I was probably 7. She let me put the baby in my dolls pram and push it around. She would dip the babies dummy in jam and also rub gums with whiskey.

I remember no seat belts and getting as many people in the car that would fit. Myself and my brother were usually in the footwell or boot!

My mam told me that when I was a baby she would just put me in my Moses basket on the back seat of the car.

lookingfoxy · 20/02/2014 14:43

I remember a lot of whats been said, my gran used to give me a glass of advocat at Christmas and if I was good I got a 2nd glass. I must have been 5 or 6. I always buy a bottle at Christmas now, I didnt realise it had alcohol in it for years !!

dottyspotty2 · 20/02/2014 14:47

There was loads of baby juices around even when my eldest was born in 1991 small juice box cartons most used them watered down by time youngest was a toddler 5 years later wasn't many. Times change we also got advised to start solids at 3 months sometimes younger.

BertieBottsJustGotMarried · 20/02/2014 16:21

You can buy them now although they say "from 4 months" and are advertised for weaning.

quirkychick · 20/02/2014 17:26

Milk of magnesia tasted like minty chalk. How that was supposed to settle your stomach I don't know. Kill or cure...

My grandma had a drinks trolley and when I used to stay over (9ish?) I remember being given little tasters Shock. Avocaat, gin, vodka and russian anyone? I remember having small glasses of strong cider at home too.
