9 months ago I was 40. Since then I have...

developed arthritis (doc says I had it earlier, I dont believe him)

started farting ALL THE TIME and (this is the important bit) being able to identify what made me fart "Oooh, sorry, that'll be the cauli"

started pulling up and placing my boobs in my bra, something I havent had to do since me breast surgery 13 years ago

waking up with a bad hip and saying "ooh that bed is going to do for me"

saying "I'd better not, I'll be up all night" if someone offers me a cup of tea after 8pm.

I hate being 40, its shit.

Ahem. I'm 46 with a 3 year old!
I cope as I've a very good and younger dh plus I drink a lot of gin Grin hope that when she's a teenager Ill be so old I won't notice the behaviour.

OneHolyCow · 20/02/2014 17:54

Haha! Ledkr, I worship thee! Funny name for a Goddess but there you go.

montysma1 · 20/02/2014 18:41

I am 47 with a 2 year old. It's fine.
I am 47 not 97.

Maverick66 · 20/02/2014 18:51

Wait until you try crossing the road and realise you are invisible. Obviously you won't actually realise you are invisible until an attractive 20 something woman joins you to cross the road and lo and behold traffic practically stops to let her cross :)

I had ds3 when I was 42 and just a young thing. Sadly the last year has been downhill all the way. I turned 50 last weekend - just 5 days after getting my prescription reading glasses. My back, hips and knees are knackered. I "had a fall" and broke my arm and I hadn't even been drinking and if one more person tells ds to "ask his Granny" I will scream!

Wine time I think.

Willyoulistentome · 20/02/2014 19:02

I lasted till about 43.

47 is fast approaching and I've gone very middle aged looking in the last few years.

LadyPersephonefernella · 20/02/2014 19:55

I turned 40 20 days ago. Not many changes here. . .yet.

Ive just read the whole thread.

faints

Ledkr · 20/02/2014 20:31

Yes willy it's taken me a while to realise I'm not just tired or wearing the wrong make up Grin looking a bit bag faced these days

Willyoulistentome · 20/02/2014 20:39

The thing that made me realise, was trying to get a decent photo for my passport renewal. I had to face the fact then that my face had sagged and gone square. I could deny it by gurning in the mirror normally , but not being able to smile or pout for a photo makes the results horrifying

SauceForTheGander · 20/02/2014 20:42

Yes Willy - after I had mine done I sent DH a text asking me why he hadn't told me I'd clearly had a stroke at some point over the last 6 months.

Ledkr · 20/02/2014 20:47

Oh isn't it awful? Yes to square and saggy.
I was so pretty until about a year ago!
I look sort of puffy!

mumminio · 20/02/2014 21:01

Ok I'm in my mid-30s...what maintenance is useful? I already eat healthily (80% of the time :) ) and work out 5x per week (except when preggers). Anything else? Not keen to inject myself with botulism...

Yes I was wondering about Botox, does it help with that tired look?
I can't see any particular wrinkles or lines but do look puffy and tired these days

Nah, don't worry you 39 year olds - we don't all fall apart at 40.

I'm 52 and not doing too badly - no grey hairs, need less sleep than ever before and significant aches yet.

Zucker · 20/02/2014 23:29

Jan 1st it started here for me. I woke up that morning and since then I've aged and I'm not imagining it. I'm only 39 this year. I feel about 90.

I am all for getting a great hair cut to cheer myself up but this time the "fab" new cut and my new square face and I now look like the put upon grand mother in the Grumpy Old Women tv show Confused

Solo · 21/02/2014 02:09

French 'it doesn't if you look after it. Am 46, have no grey hair and a 3 year old.'

It does read the way I read it if you read it like I read it!!! Grin but I get the way you wrote it!

squeakytoy · 21/02/2014 10:16

I am 44, and can honestly say I feel absolutely fine and better than I did throughout my 30's.

Can pass for mid 30's and have been asked out by numerous men in their 20's..

I still manage to stay up drinking till 6am on a regular basis and rarely suffer hangovers.

So it's not all bad being in your 40's.

Bonsoir · 21/02/2014 10:19

I'm 47 and my ability to go out in the evening, go to bed late and still function normally the following day has decreased dramatically in the past 3/4 years. There is no longer such a thing as a normal day if I have gone to bed after 23:30, and even that is pushing things.

Grennie · 21/02/2014 10:32

I am in my 40's and I think this is the decade that some things start to appear - but not for everyone. I have lots of sporty friends, and some of them have great health and no issues. Others are getting arthritis or ongoing issues with old injuries.

Of course it is also the decade many go through the menopause, which brings its own issues.

I need less sleep. But most of my friends in their 40's do seem to get more tired more quickly. Parties that used to go on till 3 or 4 in the morning, are now completely over by 1am - I am talking about childless friends here, which most of my friends are.

Grennie · 21/02/2014 10:33

And being 46 and having no grey hair at all, is very unusual.

YouTheCat · 21/02/2014 10:41

I take naps. I love my naps. Grin

Bonsoir · 21/02/2014 11:16

Oh yes, I have completely reconciled myself to guilt-free napping!
