Freelance writer, mostly internal communications for employees in large companies. Worked in the field for 10 years though. Writing is tough to break into - it really helps to have a niche.

I'm also stuck on my first novel and a published poet. Obvs that side isn't paying anything right now but one day....

I'm a solicitor and work at home part of the week but do still have ds in childcare then/ or work when he's asleep in bed.

WelshMaenad · 16/02/2014 15:22

I drink tea and procrastinate. Which is why I normally opt up work from the office.

I am a medical transcriptionist - I transcribe audio records from doctors and hospitals into digital/written forms. It did require special training, but the course was only a few months long.

I am currently on hiatus to deal with a medical issue of my own, but when I start again (soon, hopefully) I will be working a 40 hour week on a schedule I create around my DCs' needs.

Have worked from home as a business consultant in IT and as an accountant doing all the practice work for a local 1-man band firm.

Jamdoughnutfiend · 16/02/2014 18:36

I work FT, from home 2 days a week, for a professional services firm (hoping to WFH 4 days a week soon), I work on business enablement and am a sort of project manager - both DC are in full time nursery though, have been at home with dc2 last week as she has been very poorly, was so hard to work with her pottering around(I sit on your lap mummy?) will be better when they are at school as will be able to drop off or pickup (team is pretty flexible on working hours generally)

I run my own business. We make high quality coats for greyhounds, whippets and lurchers. Though mostly based at home, we do a lot of weekends especially in the summer when we travel to events/shows.

I work for a national charity from home for 30 hours a week. I have projects I keep tabs on all over the country. I work for a fab organisation with lovely people - we even have a virtual staff room! I could easily earn 300% more back in the NHS but I really don't need on calls and stress!

KingCrimson · 16/02/2014 21:20

Freelance translator.

looselegs · 16/02/2014 22:08

I'm a registered childminder-fits in great with my own children! (......all the paperwork drives me mad though....)

Oogly · 16/02/2014 23:03

Another freelance translator here. I'm quite new to it but am gradually building up clients. Working from home suits my personality...I know some people might find it isolating but I love it. Also easy for me to deal with nursery amd school pick ups.

We have a Facebook page for our Street and recently all the work from home neighbours have been arranging to meet up once a week or so for lunch in a local pub or cafe if they are around. Seems to be working well for them. They all have completely different types of jobs. I'm tempted to join them if they go on one of my days off.

People who genuinely are working from home, like me, are more than happy to tell you what they do. I started years ago working for a text message service - customers would text in questions and I would answer them. (Not just me, loads of people).

Then that went pear-shaped and I started taking on more writing and research work. I do freelance writing work. I write blogs, articles, website content and other stuff for websites. Various different niches and business sectors, everything from plumbing to law and travel.

People who say they're working from home but aren't prepared to be open about what they do are involved in multi-level marketing selling scams/schemes.

Closed the business down last year as no longer worthwhile but I spent 15 years running an small eBay business selling DD to Kk cup bras. Let me stay at home with dc's through the whole of their schooling
