To think that the term "projection" is overused on MN?

It seems that "toxic" and "narc" are no longer the buzz words they once were. Instead every other thread seems to feature one poster telling another that they are "projecting".

AIBU to find this irritating and to wonder what next bit of cod-psychology is going to make its way into the MN lexicon?

this was on a thread a few weeks back, it made me laugh, one person used it then about 20 others did. op you are 'projecting' Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/02/2014 09:24

Don't forget 'psychopathic tendencies'Hmm

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/02/2014 09:24

Yanbu btwGrin

FreudiansSlipper · 15/02/2014 09:43

i am loving the use of psychopathic tendencies Grin it seems to be the psychology term of the moment after the chanel 4 programme used it myself Blush

gaslighting was very popular a while back

not that people do not project and sadly gaslighting is very commonly used but words become popular on here

Nomama · 15/02/2014 09:45

Was that me?

Me on the house selling thread??

I am a psychologist, so I am probably guilty. Blush

But I did apply it properly - honest

DustyBaubles · 15/02/2014 11:11

Projecting is the new narcissism.

You have to wonder why anyone spends years qualifying in medicine at all, when diagnosis is so easy.

mrsjay · 15/02/2014 11:15

projecting gets on my wick it is just people sharing experiences thats all not projecting anything,

Joysmum · 15/02/2014 11:44

I try to post by telling my story so that people can see I speak from personal experience, rather than one of those who have an opinion in everything but haven't been through it themselves. By doing this, people can see why I think as I do and can make their own decisions about whether I'm projecting.

I do think it's a real issue on here though. As somebody who have been through the mill a bit and come out the other side with a very strong marriage, I often think that if DH or I had posted in the tough times, we'd have been more likely to doubt each other and our marriage would have ended. That's because of the vast numbers of people who have been hurt and see red flags in every incident.

I think it's very useful to get a sense of the persons background who is offering (or being very forceful) in their opinions.

Nomama · 15/02/2014 12:08

Oooh! Now I am confused.

What is 'projecting' as described here?

I think it may be different from how I understand and use it!

DarlingGrace · 15/02/2014 12:20

Undiagnosed.

Everything is just undiagnosed. Or it's a bit. as in, Im a bit PND or I'm undiagnosed PND (Interchange PND with bi-polar, OCD, ASD and so forth). No you aren't you are probably a bit or have undiagnosed hypochondria , also known as ASS - Attentions Seeking Syndrome. So next time someone asks, just say you're a bit (of an) ASS and we'll all know what you mean

BigFatGoalie · 15/02/2014 13:52

LTB!!!

Sorry, what are we talking about?!

Nomama · 15/02/2014 13:59

I don't know any more... it feels like I fell down the rabbit hole with Alice Smile

Gigondas · 15/02/2014 14:09

Yanbu op.

And yes joysmum I agree- there really should be a health warning like on legal at top of the relationships thread. I pity some of the posters here but even more so for some of dubious advice with the amateur analysis of personality disorders.

badtime · 15/02/2014 14:48

If what Joysmum describes is what people mean by projecting, then they are using the word wrongly anyway.

'Projecting' is when people ascribe their own feelings they are uncomfortable with to others, e.g. someone with unacknowledged racist tendencies may feel that they are being discriminated against because of their ethnicity, or a bully may feel that they are being bullied.

It does not mean that you are making assumptions about other situations based on your own experiences.

winterhat · 15/02/2014 14:56

YANBU. There's too much amateur psychology out there.

ISeeYouShiverWithAntici · 15/02/2014 14:58

I'm just happy people appear to have stopped diagnosing autism because that's what they think you have if you are a selfish arsewipe. Hmm

I remember the first word i noticed that caught hold on here and started popping up everywhere.

It was Disingenuous.

From nowhere, it was suddenly disingenuous this and disingenuous that.

You couldn't walk through any thread without it being there.

Since then there has always been one word or phrase that sweeps through. It's really noticeable.

I don't know why it is, but it's really interesting behaviour.

Not being sarcastic here. I really do mean I am fascinated by it Grin
