To not 'get' why some people go so overboard on Valentine's Day?

Admittedly DH and I don't really celebrate Valentine's, but even so...

My FB is full of statuses boasting about ipads, Tiffany jewellery, Spa vouchers, designer handbags and the like. Not to mention someone who is off to Florida today as a surprise 'For Valentine's Day'.

I'm not jealous (before anyone says that), I just don't get why some people go so mad over it. I thought Valentine's Day was about getting someone you fancied a card, and possibly a red rose if they're lucky.

Consumer-ism gone mad!

Lol I'm not an evil "dream crusher" but I do think spending lots of money on Valentines Day is a bit silly and OTT, it's one day. Having a future together that isn't blighted by debt is more romantic. If people can afford it then good for them but there is a tendency to try and 'keep up with the Joneses'. DH and I are going for a nice meal and we have agreed a £10 budget for cards and presents to take the pressure off. I work in a photo processing centre and a woman who was in a long distance relationship rushed in to get a romantic photo gift last week, worried because she'd just found out her DP was getting her an ipad Air and she couldn't afford to reciprocate in kind. So I think big presents can actually put more pressure on a relationship.

We don't really do valentines. I have had flowers and chocs a couple of times.

An old friend's DP used to go ott each year at valentines, to sighs of how wonderful from most people who knew them. he was vile a lot of the time though. She'd much rather have had someone who was nice to her all year round.

Because they can afford to and they want to. It is that simple!

Because we like it. DP got me a beautiful necklace and a card this morning, and I got a coffee in bed and some bacon sandwiches. I got him series 3 of Sherlock and a card, and we're getting Chinese takeaway tonight.

He's actually wonderfully romantic the rest of the time anyway, but we use Valentine's day as an "excuse" to do something nice and to spend a bit of extra money when normally we'd save it towards something practical.
