Just found some frozen quorn mince in the freezer dated May 2013 - what do you think?

I just remembered that not long ago I had a problem with the electrics in my kitchen, and my freezer kept going off for around 24 hours, then refreezing, then going off again etc for over a couple of weeks. I didn't have much in there but did have some bread, some quorn sausages and some frozen (some of the time) chips and peas. I tried the bread but it wasn't very nice so chucked it, but I made a meal out of the quorn sausages, chips and peas. It all tasted fine (well as good as that sort of thing is ever going to taste) and did me no harm whatsoever.

What does listeria look like?

I'd eat it if I ate quorn.

Quorn has egg in it so I wouldn't.

I visited friends in the USA about 16 years ago and was dismayed that in their freezer they had pizza dated back to the early 80's they were food hoarders and had massive shelves and freezers of food in their basement! I don't think they rotated the frozen food too well :)

Listeria is tiny plaques of cream or white bacteria. They can be just a few colonies or all over. My friend worked on food safety testing. Oh the joys of visiting her at work right before lunch!

God I would. I don't even look at the dates on stuff in the freezer or the fridge for that matter - slattern. My sister would have a heart attack at that admission.

Binned it in the end. Just wasn't hungry enough for a big bowl of chilli and didn't want to give it to the kids.

Nope.

Years ago I remember studying for a Food Hygiene certificate (passed with honours, thank you) and freezing food certainly doesn't "Stop time".

Bacteria still grows in there, it's just much slower than in a fridge.

"If in doubt, chuck it out"
