to wonder how much childcare costs?

DH and i have been married for a couple of years and are starting to think about kids.

I've made a name for myself in my career and want to carry on but would also try to be flexible. We could probably afford for one of us to be a SAHP but my career would be very hard to get back into and DHs job has some lucrative perks that would be helpful in facilitating this so,although willing to, wouldn't make sense for him to give up plus i would be jealous in a have cake and eat it way

As such we would probably both work, though whether PT or not is unknown. I'm an uber planner and was wondering how this would affect us financially but cant find any info on childcare costs. Seems like a dark art!

Can anyone shed some light on options and costs? We're Thames Valley if that helps (lots of water here but we live on a hill, or island as the case may be).

Thanks!

£45 a day in nursery 8 - 6. Includes drinks, snacks and three meals.

Childminder is £4.50 per hour in including everything but nappies and doesn't charge for her holidays but does charge for ours or for sick days.

Coastal SW. Try childcare.co.uk

My childminder costs 45 for a full day for my dd & 20 for school rate for my ds so 65 in total for 2 dc.

I work 4 days a week & my dh works full time, would you consider something similar?

I'm in Thames Valley and childminders in the area are between £50-£60 a day. Which is why I can't afford one and stay at home during the week.

Pumpkinnose · 11/02/2014 18:52

Nursery in London - £80 per day, where I used to live in London was £95 per day. Nanny is about £30k net to them so tax and NICs on top. Hideously expensive all round!

MadameJosephine · 11/02/2014 18:59

I pay £3.50 an hour for my childminder (I'm in the north east). Local nurseries near me charge £35-40 a day so for full time 8-6 would be £175-200 a week

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 11/02/2014 19:13

I pay £ 4.00 a hour for my childminder 8-5 full day. Although I work half days so pay 8-1.30.
Plus after school club for my eldest which is 11.00 a day and the childminder drops her off in the morning, which cost £5.00 a day, so £16 a day for my eldest.

Planning to use breakfast club for both next year when my youngest.
I planned for childcare costs but didn't anticipate the costs for wraparound care when they start school.

when my youngest starts school!

If you thought about the cost you'd never have children.

ceeveebee · 11/02/2014 22:54

£80-£90 per day per child for nursery round here
£60 per day per child for childminder

We have a nanny for our 2 yo twins which costs £500 per week for 4 days, plus employers NI so about £25k per year. Nursery would be £34k.

Saying that, going rate here (London) for childminder is £60 per day, food included. Don't forget childcare vouchers make that lower, not sure how it works out, maybe somebody else will have the sums

ceeveebee · 11/02/2014 22:55

Whoops I mean £400 pw not £500

Mimishimi · 11/02/2014 22:59

It depends where you live. Always more expensive and less available in cities of course. In Sydney proper and nearby suburbs , it ranges from $105 to $130 a day but is usually $40 a day cheaper if you are about an hour away. Even still, nearly all have long waiting lists. In areas where centers are expensive, childminders are scarce and nearly always fully booked - they charge approximately $9-12 an hour per child. There was an article in the paper the other day about how some parents find private school fees a bit of a relief relatively. From what I've read, it's a similar situation in London.

Thanks everyone!

Good to get it from the horses mouth, i had looked online but most local nurseries etc don't give their prices and i would have felt a bit uncomfortable calling to ask given were still thinking about it. Nice to understand how all the options vary, certainly food for thought.

Will feedback to DH. Agree there is never an ideal time and nobody's ever really financially better off by having kids unless they win the lottery and give it all to parents in gratitude but thought it sensible to at least go in with our eyes open.

In Herts we paid 60 a day for nursery, or the going rate for a childminder is 6 per hour.

HectorVector · 11/02/2014 23:06

South East - nursery is £55 a day.

MrCabDriver · 11/02/2014 23:06

I live in London. Childminder is £6 per hour, we have her for 32 hours a week so £210 per week.

This includes snacks but not lunches.
