... to ask how often your toddler in nursery is ill?

DD is 18 months, she has been in a great nursery four days a week since she was one. In that time she has been too ill for nursery five times, 2 x ear infection, 2 x D&V, now chickenpox. Is it normal for toddlers to be ill this much??? I feel sad about it as most importantly I don't want her to be ill and also it is stressful for DH and me to have the time off work Sad. Can't afford to work any less at the mo. Would love to get your thoughts ladies, thanks

Both dc started nursery young (6m & 7m), and were ill for eighteen months. I'm just looking into a CM for dd2 who is still a baby and I hate having her so poorly.

Plus she gives it to me. And time off when I already work compressed hours is a jeffing nightmare.

Purplepoodle · 11/02/2014 17:18

It's quite normal with your first child or only if you only have older children. Lucky for me when dc2 went at one he had had most of the bugs going already from his older brother (3 years old) and other slobbering babies at toddler group.

Thanks for the replies, that's reassuring, glad all the illnesses are not a sign I am a crap mum!

weekly in fact for 6 months we didnt make a whole week every week due to high temp sickness one thing or another he is at school now and he has a very good attendance

Oh man the first year my DD was in nursery (she started at 10mos) it was a nightmare! Constant cough, colds, chest infections, ear infections, conjunctivitis, D&V.

She's now 2.5 and has been pretty fine for the past 10 months (touch wood).

rachyconks · 11/02/2014 22:59

Same situation here. DD has been in nursery 3 days a week since October (she's now 14 months) and we have had hand foot & mouth, diarrhoea virus, conjunctivitis, a constant cold - nose is like a tap! Today she has come home with a vomiting bug (sick all over the car on the way home poor soul). I just keep telling myself it's good for her immune system, but it feels like one thing after another. Luckily my DH can work from home if needed so I haven't had to take much time off, but at 33 weeks pregnant I keep picking up all her illnesses because my immune system is low! Not fun!!

My DC were the same until I put them on some vitamin supplements last summer. Both have had no illnesses since starting nursery and school in September. Finally a winter without runny noses and endless coughing Grin

Do people keep children off nursery for conjunctivitis? My GP wont even treat it unless they've had it for more than 3 days, as in toddlers it usually clears up just being bathed properly. Nursery are fine with conjunctivitis, think DS has had it twice in the 18 months he's been there?

MauriceMinor · 11/02/2014 23:58

Are you kidding HopaLong? Conjunctivitis is horrible and very very contagious. It tears through nurseries. I would seriously question the hygiene standards of a nursery that was allowing children in with that.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 12/02/2014 00:24

I've never had it, even when DS had it. And it cleared up both times within two days. GP said it's usually viral so no point in treating it with drops etc. Nursery said they bathed it and followed good hand washing procedures etc, it was not a big deal at all. I was all ready to take him out until it had cleared up, they said no, he's fine. My friend uses a different nursery and they said they can go in with it as long as they have drops/cream for it, as then it's no longer contagious. So who knows. Gp was adamant that with proper bathing it would clear on its own (it did) and that it was nothing to get stressed about.

TheScience · 12/02/2014 00:25

I don't think the HPA recommend excluding for conjunctivitis either.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 12/02/2014 00:27

Yep, from NHS site:

^Do you need to stay away from work or school?

The Health Protection Agency advises that you do not need to stay away from work or school if you or your child has conjunctivitis, unless you are feeling particularly unwell.

If there are a number of cases of conjunctivitis at one school or nursery, you may be advised to keep your child away from the school until their infection has cleared up^

scarletforya · 12/02/2014 00:33

Normal. My Dd had 5 sets of antibiotics in the first six months.

rachyconks · 12/02/2014 11:02

My nursery let DD in with conjunctivitis as long as she had been to the GP and got the eye drops. AFAIK no one else got it.
