To be wary of butlins?

We would love to take the kids away on the weekend of half term (21st feb). I have two boys 2 and 5. Centerparcs and bluestone way out of our budget. I fancy butlins and think boys would have a brilliant time. We would be looking at a silver apartment.

There are so many bad reviews though and I am worried

Any experiences please?

Thanks

We've been to Bognor twice over the last year and are planning to go again! Dd is now 4 - was 3 when we went - and whilst she hasn't started school I think you get a lot for your money. Given that the prices double at least in school holidays i'm not sure we'll do it next year but for now it's great!
We stayed in the hotel best suited to younger kids (ocean??) and were well provided for. I don't think it costs much more than the apartments, it's the meals that bump up the price. Lots of choice of food though so worth it. Easy to wander onto the beach or into town for some variety too.

Bearfrills · 11/02/2014 20:59

Skegness is definitely the best one. We went last year with the DCs who were almost-4 and almost-2 and they absolutely loved it, we're booked to go again in July. We had a gold apartment with premium dining and it was lovely. New pool is brilliant (and free). Funfair, especially the Bob's Yard bit with small rides for little ones, was something else the children enjoyed and was also free so they could go as often as they liked. We went to the shows in the Pavillion in the early evening (kids shows like Bob the Builder, Skyline Gang, etc) and you get a good view from every seat plus floor space for the kids to play. We also went to the Elmo show in the show bar and for all we were at the back we still had a decent view. I never noticed a mad scrimmage to get to the front, but maybe that's because I'm not bothered about sitting at the front.

Meals are at set times but they are very broad and you don't have a specific time slot - the premium dining was open 7am to 10am for breakfast and 4pm to 7pm for dinner, you could just drop in at any time within those opening times, its no different to a cafe or restaurant having set opening times. We never queued for a table or for food and the food itself was decent with lots of choice and lots of it made to order such as omelettes and stir fry.

The staff were nice and everything was very clean. They were very quick to react to any problems. For example, our bathroom door handle fell off, we texted the number on the resort guide and within an hour it had been fixed. DD (the nearly 2yo) found a £1 coin in her fries from the onsite Burger King (I know, I fed my baby BK but we'd been travelling for five hours and needed an instant lunch) and Butlins management gave us a £50 Next voucher "to buy her something nice to make up for it"! The staff were all great with the children too, especially the ones who were "in character" such as the Skyline Gang wandering round.

Prices on resort were no more expensive than anywhere else and I found them quite reasonable. We took £500 for five days and came home with over £100 of it left. The DC liked the plastic tat sold at the stalls such as bubble guns, light up wands, helium balloons and so on and even they were fairly cheap - £5 for two bubble guns including a refill pot of bubbles and when one of the guns broke (because DD dropped it literally five seconds after it being bought) they exchanged it without a quibble. Drinks-wise it was no more expensive than our local, I was newly pregnant so was having soft drinks and DH was having large Cokes (he doesn't drink when I can't), plus soft drinks for the children, it was costing us around £3-£6 per round depending on exactly what drinks we were buying and what size. There were lots of offers on though like if you buy the plastic character cup for the kids they get cheap refills all holiday and things like that.

I really don't understand the snobbery over Butlins. I never saw beery people at breakfast, never heard a peep of noise after 10/11pm and we all enjoyed ourselves. Maybe we stuck to the naice areas of the resort :o

I live a few minutes from Bognor Butlins, don't go there it's horrible, dirty and often crawling with police due to antisocial behaviour.

We have been to Minehead a few times, both in an apartment (gold) and just a room.

The kids loved it, really loved it and it was clean and the entertainment was alright, plenty to do and the food is good if you don't go self catering.

Nerfmother · 11/02/2014 21:07

We went to Bognor. I was just on edge a lot - fake smiles in the queue for evening entertainment and then everyone literally running past to get the front seats, pushing past the disabled woman who'd been given priority access. It was horrible at times.
But. As I said the dcs loved it.
I also confess to seeing the other side when I did a Xmas stint one year.

LaGuardia · 11/02/2014 21:24

The worst thing about Butlins is that they let day visitors into the park. So, queues for the few rides go twice around the block with people determined to get their moneys worth. The pool is like human soup. The bad reviews are all correct. Go to Haven.

Haveacwtch · 11/02/2014 21:25

Thanks all. I'm quite excited about it now. Kids will love it and that makes a good holiday for us

See, I thought Haven was shite and really expensive compared to Butlins.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 11/02/2014 21:48

I love Butlins too. Going back next year I cant wait (not going this year as we are going to France instead). I dont understand the snobbery surrounding it either. I know of people who lots would consider chavvy and they dont go to butlins, but are more likely to go to one of those cheaper caravan parks in Skegness nearby.

DumSpiroSpero · 11/02/2014 21:56

We did four Easters running at Bogor and had no problems. The first year we went in the most basic accommodation available but it was warm, clean and comfortable and all we did was sleep in it.

DD was 7.5 the last time we went in 2012 and we did find by that point that she was getting a bit old for the younger kids stuff but not old enough to join in with the older groups so we gave it a miss last year.

We went for a day out last August and came to the conclusion that we have outgrown it now, but we have very happy memories of our holidays there.

Phantomteadrinker · 11/02/2014 22:12

Love Butlins, go for a short break every year 1st week of March. Kids love it and the evening entertainment is great. We do silver apartment and it's fine Smile

Guiltypleasures001 · 11/02/2014 23:07

Minehead

Oh god don't remind me

Queuing to silly o'clock I the afternoon for a key like a prison
Filthy rooms with holes and fag burns in the sheets
The showers were like little plastic coffins
The on site canteen if eating in was awful and I mean shit
The other eating places on site cheap canteen type food dirty
Cutlery shortage and more queues
Bar staff covered in love bites and ignore you
Carpets in the main entertainment room so sticky you stuck too it
Loads of amusement machines that eat money and the kids will drive you mad for because the entertainment finishes early for, them then they are borHmmd
And roaming pissed up stag parties shouting and screaming until the early hours

Never again

WooWooOwl · 11/02/2014 23:16

We went to a buttons when the dc were little, can't remember which one though.

It did it's job as a nice long weekend away for the dc perfectly. The apartment was clean and more than big enough for our family of four.

Whether you enjoy it or not depends on your expectations. It was a bit rough and the food in the main restaurant was crap, but then you are going to spend time with your own family and you have facilities for sorting decent food.

NoLikeyNoLighty · 11/02/2014 23:25

I've never been to Butlins, but we go to Haven every year with two small ones and it's always been absolutely brilliant. Book a Deluxe or Deluxe Plus caravan and they're lovely.
Loads to do on site, lots of entertainment for the kids, and usually only a short stroll from the beach.

Thisvehicleisreversing · 11/02/2014 23:30

We go to Minehead every year and love it.

The silver apartments are a bit basic but clean and with everything you need. (Last year we had a broken tin opener but one quick phone call got it replaced by a man on his bike within minutes!)

The entertainment is brilliant and there is so much for little kids to do. Bob's yard, funfair, out door play area, soft play and the great swimming pool are all free. The characters who walk about in the day are lovely for the kids to see (DS2 still talks about the dinosaur who messed up mum's hair)

Night time shows are great too, we saw Basil Brush a few years back, the funniest thing we've ever seen Grin

Minehead beach is brilliant and literally just over the road from the site.

If you can put up with the odd 'rough' family and slightly dodgy decor in the apartments you'll have a fab time.

Summerwood1 · 15/02/2014 16:05

Butlins is great,we love it. Suitable for all ages. Food very good. Apartments always clean. Minehead is my favorite.

LEMmingaround · 15/02/2014 16:10

I'd be dubious about butlins - have had some great "haven" and "sun" holidays in caravan parks, i would worry that id be ripped off at butlins - the same for centre parcs too.

vintagesewingmachine · 15/02/2014 17:58

We love CenterParcs but it can be a bit pricey. We bought a caravan and now can go wherever we like for as long as we like for as little as ten quid a night. Plus DCs get to see some of the wonderful places to visit in the UK. We did Pontins once when I was a child and it was so dire, it put me off those Hi-de-Hi type places forever!!

Sparklymommy · 15/02/2014 19:44

We have just booked for minehead butlins for Monday after our coach holiday to Disneyland was cancelled due to the adverse weather. We found out on Friday afternoon and as I had already packed I got online to find something cheap and cheerful to soften the blow!

For 8 of us (4 adults and 4 children), self catering in two silver rooms it has cost us £402. Having looked online there is plenty to keep the children entertained and dd1 (who is 11) has been begging to go since she was tiny watching the ads on tv.

I haven't been since I was a kid and have to say I am quite looking forward to it. I don't remember having any particularly bad experiences and the entertainment is good as I remember.

When we have looked in the past the price has put me off, as its always come up at over a grand for a weekend.

We are still going to Disney, just not until may now!

RealAleandOpenFires · 15/02/2014 22:57

Don't forget to wear a "Butlin's Escape Committee" t-shirt? Wink

Bonkerz · 15/02/2014 23:11

Off to skeggy butlins on Monday with DCs (13/12/8/2) and the kids are so excited. We try to go every year but cost is a major factor. Have booked the silver rooms with dining plan this year and am looking forward to not cooking for 4 days!

Chasdingle · 15/02/2014 23:17

we've had a couple of trips of butlins over the last two years, one to Skeggy and the other to Minehead. We booked on site last year to go to minehead in may this year and got a good deal.

Out of the two we preferred minehead as it suited us better but the accomodation is nicer at skeggy, more up to date. Minehead is still mainly the old fashioned chalets although they are clean enough.

The food at Skeggy in the dining package was lovely and we were really disappointed with minehead food which was awful- so this year have booked self catering at minehead- there is a morrisons about 5 mins walk from minehead so can go there for shopping/ cafe, plus the food in the sun and moon pub looked quite reasonable and much more relaxed than the dining room.

The softplay at minehead is much bigger and is in the skyline pavilion so you can get a cup of coffee etc while they play, at skeggy the softplay is in an arcade.

Not been to skeggy since the new pool opened but it looks good.

The Bob the builder yard at Minehead had more rides than the skeggy one.

I've been to haven but would put Butlins streets ahead, theres so much more included in the price. You tot up how much the rides would cost you at £1.50/£2 per person any other place.

We didn't so the evening shows yet as DS not really interest but may try this year.

Crazedandconfused · 15/02/2014 23:23

Love Butlins! We have taken our 2 for the last 4 years. The last 2 years we have managed to go through The Sun...3 nights for 2 adults and 2 children for about £80, can't beat that! (No, don't pay for the entertainment pass as they don't exist)
I'm quite gutted we aren't going this year but I guess it's time to try something new.

dadlovesthatboy · 22/01/2016 12:23

It's simple. If you are on your own and jsut want your children to have fun, Butlin's beats all but Disneyland. It's cheap and has the lowest common denominator trashiness kids adore. But... if you're a little sniffy, and it's about you, (and you can afford it) then go to Center Parcs. But yoru children will still want Butlin's. Go to Skegness for the rollercoaters and the best beach for a bucket and spade. But really CP is Butlin's under another name, and is for those with a self-impotance over their kids, they'll talk about the quality of accomodation, noise, tatto-count etc etc. The very things kids don't give a stuff about.

TiddlyFitShaced · 22/01/2016 12:44

ZOMBIE thread!

Did you dig this up just to call people who don't like Butlins snobs? Hmm
I can assure you my children have zero interest in Butlins!

Joolsy · 22/01/2016 13:07

We went to Butlins Minehead v recently and loved it. I was v wary beforehand too. But we had a Gold apartment, was lovely, plus premium dining - couldn't fault it. Got a bit crowded at times but it they were sold out that week. Would def return.
