Most of the BBC commentary is so bland and boring, I switch off the sound so as to cut out the drone. I enjoyed the commentary on this sport, its a new, hip and young person's sport, and the commentary was entirely in keeping with it.

People who complain about these things have far too much time on their hands. Perhaps they should actually get out the house and do something interesting, instead of moaning and complaining about those who do.

LessMissAbs · 14/02/2014 10:41

Steve Cram seems to be doing well with the curling, along with Jackie Lockhart. It can't be an easy sport to commentate on interestingly, but how surprising that Steve Cram has such an interest in curling! He has actually bothered to do some research on it too, so he makes some informative comments.

Unlike Hazel Irvine, who despite years of sports commentating, rarely says anything interesting on any subject. Jonathon Edwards does not impress me as he again seems to fall into the bland and boring style which presumably the BBC viewers prone to complain like. I thought the best commentary from him was after the speed skating when he handed over to the Dutch commentator, who talked at length in an erudite, interesting and fascinating way.

"He has gone right the way through the finish line . . . on his FACE"

LtEveDallas · 14/02/2014 11:57

My favourite is still "Riding switch is like writing left-handed while wearing a chip hat and being attacked by seagulls"

jay55 · 14/02/2014 12:05

It was awful, laughing and cheering at falls, especially as our competitor had done such an easy run in comparison.

I'm all for enthusiastic sports commentary (well not matt baker who is like to gag during the gymnastics) but this wasn't commentary and was just shit.

MTBMummy · 14/02/2014 13:26

300 complaints out of 3m viewers, why are we even wasting our time discussing this?

ShadowOfTheDay · 14/02/2014 13:35

because even though people like myself did not complain, some of us thought it was thoroughly unprofessional and unsportsmanlike of the commentators and cringe to think that this heap of unprofessional crap - the BBC commentary - is what the world will see of us as Brits... keep on dumbing down ....

ShadowOfTheDay · 14/02/2014 13:35

but that is just my opinion.... I'm allowed one..

Seff · 14/02/2014 14:12

What do you think the world thinks of the British now? That the BBC is representative of us all?

MrsCakesPremonition · 14/02/2014 14:40

My favourite commentary so far is Steve Cram gently condemning the miserable attitude of the USA's male curling team.

evertonmint · 14/02/2014 15:40

All the other countries do their own commentary so why would anyone base their opinion of us on a commentary they wouldn't have heard anyway? Confused

LessMissAbs · 14/02/2014 16:47

Dumbing down versus blanding out, Shadow?

Yes, MrsCakes I noticed that too - he said their "attention was elsewhere" - very tactful!

Salmotrutta · 15/02/2014 11:51

To go off on a tangent a bit:-

The skater Elise Christie who was penalised the other day and missed out on a medal has been getting abuse on the Internet!

Probably from a bunch of armchair experts Hmm

Seff · 17/02/2014 11:09

I'm really enjoying the curling commentary. They are a good team, with the curling expert, and the voice of the people, asking questions and seeming to genuinely enjoy learning about the sport.

"He's like a caged minx - prowling up and down"

Mink? Lynx?

Mitchy1nge · 17/02/2014 19:11

why are those German ski jumpers so hot?

KittyVonCatsington · 17/02/2014 19:25

Thought it was hilarious and kept me watching. Specifically liked the phrase, "it's like a half price meat sale at Lidl down there!". Laughed myself silly!

SlowlorisIncognito · 17/02/2014 20:57

I thought their interview with Elsie Christie after her first event (500m?) was really bad, actually. They asked her if she felt she had been fairly penalised, and she said it's always a 50:50 call and she hadn't seen the video, but she felt she wasn't at fault. Fair enough comment, however they went on to ask her the same question several times. She was clearly upset and only in her early twenties and I thought they were putting too much pressure on her.

"The girl from the Czech Republic, whose grandad played ice hockey for the Czech Republic... No, it would have been the former Yugoslavia back then" heh

divisionbyzero · 19/02/2014 10:40

The BBC seems to employ a lot of illiterates and guttersnipes these days, and to almost fetishize super-questionable personal character and values in their output, so this sort of repulsive spite is no longer surprising.

I would never bother to complain to the modern beeb, their public responses to complaints seem to be overly lengthy and wordy expressions of "FU, we do what we like peasant".

It's quite bizarre to see actually (having worked with people in real businesses as many of us have), a complaints department that seems to think its job is to argue with its customers and piss them off.
