I'm getting an early upgrade, DD's nokia has packed up and she thinks she may get my old one in September? Apparently all her friends have them, but I really don't know? It'll be PAYG with no insurance (unless anyone knows of one that covers school ?)

giffgaff is like pay as you go, so you can't go over. if you run out of minutes you have to top up. ds1 gets the £10 goodybag each month, unlimited texts, 1gb of internet and 500 free minutes, ds2 gets the £7.50 goodybag, 200 mins, unlimited text and 500gb of internet. they don't really use the internet, as log onto wifi wherever possible, ds2 doesn't go out much yet as only yr7, more just so that I can call him or he call me if hes going to be late home from school/clubs.

ToBeSure · 10/02/2014 11:29

I'd keep the same Apple ID on it that you have then you can track her every move with find my IPhone app Grin

I have posted before on Apple restrictions under a different name. I'll find the info and repost it.

ToBeSure · 10/02/2014 11:51

The following applies to IPhones. You can choose exactly what apps and websites your DD is able to access and, if you follow the steps given below, you can have a record of every website she visits. It's easy to block twitter, snapchat and Facebook. I would happily let a 12 use an Iphone that had been set up properly.

I hope you don't mind if I post the following. I have posted it before under a different name. Apologies if you already know all the points raised but I figure that it doesn't do any harm to post it again. It's for iOS7

FOR iOS7

THE BASICS FOR STOPPING UNINTENTIONAL IN-APP PURCHASES

  1. keep your iTunes password private and not guess'able

1a ) make sure that the email account associated with your itunes account is one that you check regularly. This will mean you will be aware of any expenditure on your itunes almost immediately.

  1. Enable restrictions SETTINGS >>>> GENERAL. >>> RESTRICTIONS >>> then enter and re-enter a non-guessable 4 digit PIN number.

3). Then turn off in-app purchases
SETTINGS >>>> GENERAL. >>> RESTRICTIONS >>> your PIN NUMBER >>>>. Turn off IN-APP PURCHASES

  1. Require a password every time you make an iTunes purchase. This is your Apple ID password. SETTINGS >>>> GENERAL. >>> RESTRICTIONS >>> your PIN NUMBER >>>> REQUIRE PASSWORD >>>> toggle it to IMMEDIATELY

5). Remove your credit card from your iTunes account and use itunes vouchers.

  1. turn off autofill and credit card info

SETTINGS >>> SAFARI >>> PASSWORDS AND AUTOFILL >> toggle off NAMES AND PASSWORDS AND turn off CREDIT CARDS

BLOCKING ADULT WEB CONTENT (ie porn 'n stuff)

Even if you have decent controls on your home network and it's worth following the info in the following THIS LINK This feature is even more important if your child has a 3G device or accesses the internet via networks with no controls.

PREVENTING CHILDREN FROM BEING ABLE TO DELETE THEIR BROWSING HISTORY_. . (This feature is BRILLIANT!!)

SETTINGS >>>> GENERAL. >>> RESTRICTIONS >>> your PIN NUMBER >>>> WEBSITES >>> then tick LIMIT ADULT CONTENT

This removes the option to delete the history of which websites your child has visited. For younger children you can specify which websites you DC can visit and prevent them from visiting any other sites at all. You can find this option by doing the following

SETTINGS >>>> GENERAL. >>> RESTRICTIONS >>> your PIN NUMBER >>>> WEBSITES >>> then tick SPECIFIC WEBSITES ONLY this will allow you to specify which websites can and can't be visited.

PRIVACY

I recommend that anyone who is concerned about privacy and has Apple devices running iOS7 have a look at THIS LINK It details how you can prevent pesky Apple and other apps accessing information about you.

Disclaimer, I am happy to have the above info corrected. I think its right but I am not at all an expert

This info is for iOS7 only.

Completely agree with DustBunnyFarmer.

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 10/02/2014 12:17

A word of warning re keeping same apple account, when they get older nd have all their music on their ipods/ipads/iphones and you are sharing an account, it means if they set up their own one, they lose the music and apps that they have brought.

This happened to ds1, we shared an apple id, hes 16 now and wanted his own account, but it meant either he or me lost our paid for music. Also things like the cloud and imessage/facetime are shared. hence me getting face time calls at 2 am from his girlfriend grrrrr.

Stinklebell · 10/02/2014 12:26

My 12 year had my old iPhone 4S for Christmas after I upgraded to the 5

I put a Vodafode PAYG sim in it and she has a £10 a month bundle, she keeps it inside her blazer pocket which she's not allowed to take off at school, she doesn't flash it around and knows if she loses it, she loses it. It's on our mobile phone insurance anyway (freebie through our bank)

I've turned the 3G off on it so she can only go online at home on the wifi while there's someone around to keep an eye on it

I didn't see the point of buying a phone, cheapo or not, when I had one sitting at home doing nothing. She knows it's a one off, knows not to expect more and more expensive gadgetry each year and is sensible with it.

ToBeSure · 10/02/2014 12:31

It is true about risking loosing shared music and apps if you share the same itunes account. I still share the same account as my eldest DS who has left home. Confused We both really enjoy music and share similar tastes but we will have to break free at some stage!

We have seperate iCloud accounts for mail and contacts etc but share our Apple ID for music, apps and Find my IPhone.

Bubble80 · 10/02/2014 12:41

Yanbu. My 7yr old has a hand me down iPhone 4. Some folk may think its mad, but it costs us nothing. He obviously has no contract (so like an iPod touch essentially) but can iMessage all the family, FaceTime relatives far away and is monitored on it. He also has his own ipad. I'd get shot by some mumsnetters Wink. I don't care because I know he is as happy up a tree, on his bike or playing on his gadgets if it's raining.

Retrospectively an iPhone is no more expensive today than a games console was back in the early 90s. Don't quote me on that, it's just a vague observation

cls77 · 10/02/2014 14:39

Thankyou everyone some great advice here, TobeSure thats fantastic help, thankyou so much :) Ive already had a browse on my 5 just to see what the password and parental controls etc are like, and that is really helpful.

I also think I will get a different ID for her with the understanding that only I know the password, so that she cant purchase anything herself but will benefit from her own music which she already wants to do, and when she gets itunes vouchers for presents she can use them rather than me having to give her the cash which is what happens now!! Hmm
Im with you Stinklebell - DD has hers in her blazer and she knows she will get the ghastly and bulky start up phone should she lose the one she has now (Lumia 520) and the same will apply with this.

Bubble Do you mean your DS doesnt climb trees in the rain? Grin

OP posts:
bodygoingsouth · 10/02/2014 14:43

as long as he's climbing trees in a pink tutu it's ok for some mumsnetters. Grin

Absolutelylost · 10/02/2014 15:10

I think I might take top prize, we gave my 6 yr old an old 4S at Christmas. She loves it, mostly she plays games on it and texts and Facetimes my DH when he away for work. It's got a £10 SIM and she's got no idea it has Internet access! I do get frosty looks in Tesco, I have to admit....

Bubble80 · 10/02/2014 15:12

He does climb trees in the rain, but they are slippery ;)
And he does own a baby and a buggy and is often seen in his sisters dresses. Do I get extra points? Wink

chocoluvva · 10/02/2014 16:17

It's a veeerrrry expensive way to own a smartphone.

You can get a good smartphone for £50 - (with a longer charger cable than the iphones).

cls77 · 10/02/2014 16:54

Choco DD has had a Nokia Lumia 520 since September, and it's on/off /screen unlock button isknackered! Common fault with it apparently :( cost me £90.
This iphone I'm thinking about won't cost me a penny, just the rolling/payg tenner a month I currently spend?

OP posts:
nennypops · 10/02/2014 17:15

How do you transfer an iPhone? I tried with my old 3G, but when I put DS' sim in it didn't work.

AcaciaBeez · 10/02/2014 19:03

Chocoluvva why is it so expensive to own a smart phone? If they already have the handset and are just going to use a payg sim and wifi why is it so expensive?

AcaciaBeez · 10/02/2014 19:03

Nennypops is it a different network? Unless the phone is unlocked it won't work

chocoluvva · 10/02/2014 19:08

Blush - I didn't read your OP properly.

(I upgraded a really basic phone to a smartphone that would have cost @ £50. It has an excellent camera and all the usual things as far as I know. I was amazed that smartphones had come down in price so much.)

collarsandcuffs · 10/02/2014 19:32

I think it is an expensive gift and it would not be my choice but there can be benefits, it can teach your child to learn to budget money to pay for their top ups and a degree of responsibility. However, I don't agree that they get a replacement cheap phone should they lose it. If they lose it they should have to budget again to pay for their own replacement.

SofiaC3 · 18/02/2014 18:22

I would definitely give your DD the old phone. Trust plays a huge part and if you think this is something you can trust her with, I’m sure she would greatly appreciate it. IPhone 5’s are a bit on the pricy side, so I would stress the importance of taking care of the iPhone to her. I would get it insured just in case. My family uses iPhone insurance through Protectcell. You can easily set up a plan for your DD in case there is any physical phone damage or if it gets stolen. I have the Data Plan for my DD and it costs about 22 euros. If you have any questions feel free to message me or you can find the info here- www.protectcell.com/Beyond-Cell-Phone-Insurance/iPhone.aspx
