to ask if false negatives really happen?

My periods restarted four months ago after having toddler dd. The second one was about 28 days after the first, the third 30 days later and the fourth 30 days later - so fairly regular it seemed. However now it's been about 44 days since the last one. I did a test last week and it was negative so I assumed I wasn't pregnant and forgot about it. My friend is TTC and she asked about us trying for more this morning so I mentioned I'd done a test last week. She asked if my period had arrived and when I said it hadn't she said she doesn't know how I've waited to test again as it's likely to be a false negative. I assumed my periods are just still a bit messed up and tbh, didn't really believe false negatives occur if the test is done when period is late. Have you had a false negative?

Just a hint. The pharmacies in supermarkets sell tests far more cheaply than the supermarket has on the shelf on the shellf. Less than £2 iirc. Just in case you needed to get lots!

scantilymad · 07/02/2014 18:11

Sorry - only one shelf. No idea how I got the Fred Elliot's there

peanutbear · 07/02/2014 18:18

Both my ds were negative until 4 months my 2nd ds I was told was a cyst until the ultrasound

Finaldeskination1 · 07/02/2014 18:22

Pink hard hat.
Im in same position. I am on day 38 of my cycle. Lots of negative tests. Had sore boobs for three weeks now. The other day I had cramps. Today my stomach is sore.
I have pcos though so could be my hormones but this is the longest cycle ive had.

wilmawebb · 07/02/2014 18:38

Yes it does happen. I had a false negative with my second.

JapaneseMargaret · 07/02/2014 18:49

Yes, false negatives happen often enough, if there's not enough hormone detected in the urine. Until your period arrives, all bets are off, even if you're getting negative results.

However there are lots of reasons why your period might not arrive/be delayed - pregnancy is just one of them.

Have you poas op? Smile

midnightinmoscow · 07/02/2014 19:08

False negative here too.

I was admitted to hospital with abdomen pain - hospital test was negative. Discharged the next day, did another test as I was so desperate to get pg. Postive straight away!!

CouthyMow · 07/02/2014 19:09

My false negative will be 16 in a month. It was only my insistence on a scan that confirmed the pg at 11 weeks...

Blueuggboots · 07/02/2014 19:12

I had a negative test so went and signed up for a new car. Then tested positive 3 days later!!!

Spaulding · 07/02/2014 19:26

I had a false negative. Tested again the next day and it was positive and I now have DS!

Aelfrith · 07/02/2014 19:41

Yes I had a false negative at the GPs. Cramps and bleeding felt really unwell with a pain in my side. POAS at the surgery with a test the GP handed me...negative, sent home, told it was a gastro thing. Later that night, admitted to,hospital query appendicitis, turned out to be ruptured ectopic. Only showed on blood test.

OhTheDrama · 07/02/2014 19:45

I didn't show up as being pregnant on a HPT until 6 weeks with both DC's.

CherryLips1980 · 07/02/2014 19:52

My false negative will be 13 weeks old tomorrow :) Have you POAS yet?!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 07/02/2014 20:12

Yes, I had 12 - count them! - 12, negative home pregnancy tests before the Dr's test came back positive with DS1. They did the more sensitive one where they send the urine away to the lab, rather than the Clearblue type they seem to use today.

With DS2 & DD, the home tests came up positive though.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 07/02/2014 20:13

Oh, forgot to add, POAS! Grin

MeepMeepVrooooom · 07/02/2014 20:16

I had two false negatives when I was about 3+4 weeks late. Decided to change brand and got a positive (same day as one of the negatives). DD is now 2.5

Re-test.

deakymom · 07/02/2014 21:30

yes i took two tests (clearblue) they both said i was not pregnant so i went out for a drink with my friends halfway through drink one i felt ill and fortunately didnt drink any more tested again the next day i was pregnant

bluebeanie · 08/02/2014 07:48

Yes. My period was late. Made the mistake of not using the first pee of the day having not long drunk some water and test was negative. Waited two hours, tested again - positive

Loopyaboutmy2boys · 08/02/2014 08:57

I got a BFP this week on cd 53...I hadn't ovulated until day 40...my only two prev cycles were 41 and 45 days long since AF returned after having BF for a very long time after having ds2. Maybe you have also ovulated late this month?

PinkHardHat · 08/02/2014 22:40

Got another negative today but still no sign of period. We haven't been using birth control but also haven't dtdas often aas usual as he's been working away - but maybe often enough!

Just want to know either way. It's about day 46 now!
