waiting for my middle daughter to ring to say her first baby has arrived? She went into labour at midnight yesterday and is still there, progressing slowly. I am gutted for her in a way, my longest of 3 labours was 7 hours start to finish, her elder sister was the same with hers and I had so hoped she would have a short labour, I almost (note only almost) wish I could be taking the pain for her. I can't wait to meet him though!

Tiredoutgran, when I had my ds last year, our parents did two things which meant a lot to us and really made the transition easier. I hope you don't mind if I share, I know all family relationships are different though.

The first thing they did which was amazing was bring us food. Not frozen or dried things, but fresh salads, freshly roasted chicken, a bolognese, cut fruit salads. All were in portions / quantities small enough not to go to waste and to allow me to snack on when I had two seconds to as the concept of "meals" went out the window. If they came over in an evening they brought a whole meal over with them, we say down together and ate it, then they cleared it up and took it home with them again. Only small, but I will never forget the thought!

I credit eating really well the first few weeks with a successful start to bf, our parents and my dh were a huge part of this. If it hadn't been for them I'd have lived on biscuits and dry cereal!!

Secondly, they gave us space. I know they worried and wanted to help every moment of the day, but they made it very clear to us that they were there when we needed them... Not all the time. We had great support from NCT friends who were going through the same thing as we were, and between the help from these friends and the love of our family, I look back and think we had a pretty good first few months.

When I gave birth my mum was just finishing work and thought she would pop up to the labour ward (she works next to the hospital) to see how I was, I'd only been in hospital for an hour.

As she was walking up the stairs my dp came flying down them and told her we had a dd. Shock for my mum (and all of us) as it all happened so quickly!!

thank you all. I haven't met him, I am waiting for her to come home a little later on rather than have to take the 4 Dgc who live with me to the hospital. I am just going to nip round on my own for half an hour to meet him and then leave them to rest. She and DP are living with her dad at the moment so that they can save for a deposit on a house, I know he knows what he is doing with babies and will spoil her rotten. I wish I could just be there 24/7 for a few days for her but the other children make it impossible, I think she would prefer the peace and quiet to having 4 (noisy)children there. Two of the girls were ill earlier this week too and I definitely don't want them taking any germs round to the baby.
