to wonder why toilet seats don't last...

My children appear to be pissing through the metal that holds them together. Third one in about 2 years has just given up.

Are my children unusual? Do they have extra corrosive wee?

I think they are made poorly nowadays. The one in my parents house was over 35 years old and not a wobble! The one in our house now is nasty cheap plastic and slides about a bit. I really hope it doesn't get any worse as there is no way to change it unless .... you dismantle everything by taking the actual toilet pan off the floor, as its one of those back to wall toilets against a cabinet, and the screws are hidden inside. Unbelievably bad design. Next time I buy a toilet I will make sure the screws can be accessed!

solveproblem · 05/02/2014 20:06

I used to have the same problem but then I bought an Argos value seat and it has so far lasted 2.5 years! White plastic so doesn't corrode.

goshhhhhh · 05/02/2014 20:12

DH changed our fittings last week so we didn't need a whole new seat. Didn't know you could do that!

Sallystyle · 05/02/2014 20:13

I bought a new one 6 weeks ago.

It has just now broke.

I think my kids slam it down too hard.

DramaAlpaca · 05/02/2014 20:17

Yes, I think it's the quality of the fittings. Stainless steel hinges is the way to go.

With three sons, we went through a lot of loo seats because the hinges got all corroded & rusty thanks to the boys' dodgy aim. We eventually got one with stainless steel hinges & that has lasted years with no sign of corrosion.

OneWaySystemBlues · 05/02/2014 20:19

I've been wondering the same thing! Downstairs loo, no steam, I don't put bleach on the hinges (though I do obviously clean them with a non- bleach cleaner!) - all the fittings are corroding and disintegrating. It's disgusting and I hate it.

shewhowines · 05/02/2014 20:28

B&q sell the hinge sets for about £7

ILoveNoodles · 05/02/2014 20:54

I'm with solveproblem we too have an argos value and it's been doing good, and can withstand any kind of cleaning.
Have spent so much money on bloody toilet seats the one before costing £30, and it was a pile of crap.
A little tip; put a dab of super glue on the screw bit that will help to give it a firm hold.

WooWooOwl · 05/02/2014 20:59

I think toilet fittings in our house have the same piss/toilet cleaner issue as yours.

I blame all the males in my house, not just the pre pubescent ones. Hmm

Chesntoots · 05/02/2014 21:03

I broke one at work the other day and had to fess up. I am now "Thunder buttocks"...

Bubble80 · 05/02/2014 21:06

My toilet seat always ends up to one side! it's squint no matter how often I straighten it.

Berryglitter · 05/02/2014 21:12

YANBU! I had a run in the other day, decided to take a break and spend some me time on the loo. Got ready, sat down and slid like a bar of soap, metal hinges pinched deep into my ample arse cheek, and on to the tiles in fell, seat still attached to my backside. Cue hysterical laughing from my son.

Stupid toilet seat.

theywillgrowup · 05/02/2014 21:15

yep i used to have the same problem (3 boys)

anyway i have solved it,this one has lasted 2+yrs and no horrible cacky hinges, oppossed to lasting 6months and cacky hinges

bought one from the "bath store"think thats what its called was £40 much more than what i wanted to pay so checked Ebay, same one only £16 including postage

so i would say quality may count, deffo worth looking into it,worked out a bargain

Misspixietrix · 05/02/2014 21:16

YNBU. 3rd one in 2 years. I may just have a fat arse too though Grin.

JockTamsonsBairns · 05/02/2014 21:20

YANBU - I thought it was just me. We've been here for four years, and are on our fourth loo seat. The last one was 35 bloody quid and has lasted less than a year. Mind you, I did fancy one of those Laura Ashley ones out of home base, but Dh baulked at the £72 price tag and I was overruled. I don't know what the hell goes wrong with them these days. My mum's had hers for 34 years, and it is in brand new nick.

AwfulMaureen · 05/02/2014 21:21

Ours has been in place for 7 years. Are people who are heavier sitting down in an awkward fashion? Doing the slide sit....where you sit down on one cheek and then kind of shuffle to the side?

dementedma · 05/02/2014 21:27

Thought it was just us! Sick of replacing it!
Think ds lets it bang down. Also hinges corrode really quickly

shewhowines · 05/02/2014 21:33

I stand up to wipe. Does that take some of the pressure off it?

charlieandlola · 05/02/2014 21:36

Laura Ashley Wooden toilet seat - £75 odd from Homebase but v robust.
Also Roca has lasted well for us also.

vitaminC · 05/02/2014 21:37

I'd never had one break until a couple of years ago and I've now been through 5 in 2 years! I say it's definitely the quality going down the pan (pun intended) Grin

violetwellies · 05/02/2014 21:40

Not fit for purpose, we should start taking them back.

Itsaboatjack · 05/02/2014 21:41

I run a pub. We go through loads of toilet seats. The ones that last the longest are the horse shoe shaped ones rather than a full oval iyswim.

cees · 05/02/2014 21:41

Mine drives me crazy, sliding all over the place and pinching my leg when I sit. It's a different brand from the previous ones which were all shit, no matter what I spend I can't buy one to last more then a year.
