To think there's no need for such specificnees in pregnancy?

I've noticed a new vogue for saying "I'm 26+3"(that was an example, other degrees of pregnancy are available).

Wha?

Yup, if you're nearly due or overdue and are practically counting in milliseconds, it's completely understandble, but whyohwhy during the term?

Surely "6ish months" , or "two-thirds gone" is utterly fine?

It's quite spoiling my enjoyment of the baby name boards on Nethuns. Wink

YABU !!

am 30+6 and EVERY DAY COUNTS (have 64 days left to go and am willing every second away

ZingSweetApple · 06/02/2014 17:02

GP/MW/consultant always ask specifically.

I guess it's just a habit.

if needed I'm specific about it - otherwise I just say 17 weeks or nearly 4 months.

(17+2 today - just FYI ChaosWink )

It's very much a pfb thing...With dd people would ask how far gone I was and I would say "errrr...5 months ish?" With ds I knew the weeks and days!

HauntedNoddyCar · 06/02/2014 23:46

I guess those with a complicated history get a free pass to count the pg days.
My first scan dated me to conception being while DH was overseas rather than the reunion shag that was the conception. Momentarily awkward.

Other than that blame the pg book, emails and NHS

Once you get past 18 months you should start using years unless there is some issue.

Seff · 07/02/2014 08:02

WRT children's ages, I guess it depends who I'm talking to and what we're discussing. In general conversation about my children, it's fine to use years. If I was talking with another mum at toddler group about something more specific, it may be more helpful to use a more accurate age, as a few months can make a big difference in terms of development or behaviour.

I think it can be partly a PFB thing, but I adapt all sorts of conversations based on who I'm talking to, why would a discussion about children be any different? If a family member asks how I am, I would go into a little more detail than if it was the checkout person in the supermarket.

(that took some working out!)

SaraHillsBook · 07/02/2014 08:10

28 weeks is one thing. 28+3 is another.

SaraHillsBook · 07/02/2014 08:11

28 weeks is one thing. 28+3 is another. Really unless discussing viability I see now need for this specificity. So what if one PP's baby turned at 34+2?! Doesn't mean yours will!

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 07/02/2014 08:26

I don't know how many months I am. I know I am 29 weeks because I had 28 week bloods taken a week ago.I can't do even the simple maths required to convert it to months. So if asked, I'll say I'm 29 weeks gone. I know I go up a week on a Wednesday so if you ask me next Monday I'll say nearly 30 weeks because I'm keen to round up and convince myself I'm nearly there! For speed of typing I might put 29+5 because it's fractionally quicker to type and I am bemused by the idea it might annoy someone!

If I'm typing my toddler's age it's quicker to put 3.3 or whatever than 'recently turned 3'. I haven't a clue how many weeks/months old he is. It would really confuse me if someone referred to their 40 month old.

When I am counting down to maternity leave I become incredibly specific and start counting the exact number of seconds I have left at work.

ZingSweetApple · 07/02/2014 08:42

katese

it is most certainly not a PFB thing.

it is what all the medical professionals used 13 years ago when I was pg with DS1.

I'm now expecting #7 and it's second nature to count it weeks and days.
It's just a habit, because I get asked a lot.

Bootoyou2 · 07/02/2014 08:52

It doesn't bother me at all. It is important for medical professionals so they may be repeating what was written in their notes.

However I think is most likely due to all the fun smart phone apps in pregnancy that send you a daily message about what stage of development the baby is at eg today 16+3 the baby is the size of a plum and now has finger nails. It makes you so much more aware of exactly where you are.
