To feel really rather worried about the shouty gravel-yer-drive men ...

I'm in a state. I'm shaking.

Just seen off a bunch of blokes who knocked on my elderly neighbour's door ( we share a drive ) said they were from the council and offered to fill in the couple of pot holes at the end of the drive for a couple of hundred quid - you can guess where this is going - they did the whole thing and demanded several thousand.

Lots of arguing.

We stuck to our guns and offered a cheque for the agreed amount. They kept going away and coming back asking for less each time and in the end said they'd settle for three hundred in cash ( offering to drive me to the cashpoint! ) We said no and offered a cheque for the agreed amount again. They went off saying that travellers never forget an insult.

I've phoned the non-emergency police number and told them what happened.

Has anyone else had a similar experience and what happened later?

Oi!

Don't de-rail my thread with a load of anti-traveller crap!

I'm having a problem with one lot of pushy drive-gravellers. that's all.

It's considered an ethnic slur. Look it up if you don't believe me. Replace that word with n*r or p*i, it's the same equivalent.

Feckless is right. Don't derail her thread with anti traveller nonsense.

Have you got a neighbourhood watch where you live op? Is it worth calling a residents meeting?

Fecklessdizzy · 03/02/2014 16:13

I'll look into it ... We get this quite oftain at work " Oh, we're the council, we've got a bit left over at the end of a job, do you want us to do your car park ... Hmm " It never occured to me that anyone would actually fall for it! Mr Next-door is usually quite sharp so I'm surprised he did ...

In which case - you might want to have a chat with his family if you see them around. Let them know that he is potentially being targeted.

Fecklessdizzy · 03/02/2014 16:24

I've phoned his son already - he's coming round after work.

You sound very proactive Feckless and a very good neighbour.

Well done but do ensure your own safety and well being.

Aww shucks Blush

Mr Next-door is a nice old chap, he was a bit stiff initially - DP's a big hairy biker - but he's been really kind. I'm glad to return the favour.

How's it going Feckless? Has the police been

roundtable · 08/02/2014 21:07

Yet? Sorry for the abruptness, my phone posted too early!

Hope you and your neighbour is ok.

Caboodle · 08/02/2014 21:52

Feckless - we can only hope that if scammers return it's your hairy biker who answers the door....I'd like to see their reaction to that one Grin

More seriously - what a lovely neighbour you are.
