to email a company grassing up a speeding driver?

I live on a 30 mph limit road. There are schools close by. I saw a van going at around 50-60 mph along the road this morning at around 8 am-I could have easily pulled out in front of it and been hit if I hadn't been as alert as I was. Should I email the company or does that make me even more of a mean spirited, grumpy old bastard than I already am?

I'd report.

I live on a 30mph road which has various child-related facilities on it and close by. It is also a conduit to an A-road. Many drivers go in excess of the speed limit. How do I know? Because we have one of those signs that lights up and tells you if you're going over the speed limit. I think it's pretty easy to tell who is going too fast by observation, particularly if you live on a road that has dangerous aspects.

fairyfuckwings · 05/02/2014 09:21

I don't doubt the van was going faster than the other vehicles that use tge road. But the op has no way of knowing it was 50-60 mph.

And yes if you're driving at 30mph and a car overtakes then obviously you know the car was driving faster than you but you can't accurately calculate how much faster unless you speed up and match the speed.

Plus the op was stationary at the time waiting to pull out. Speeding cars always seem to be going faster than they are. I've said it myself when being overtaken. "He must have been going at least 60!" When in reality I have no idea about speed and am just speculating.

I took a photo of a van parked in the parent and child parking while the drivers ate their lunch and emailed it to the company on the side of the van.

This comment must surely be a joke. Really? You potentially got a couple of guys suspended/lost pay for using a P&C space. You must have had a specially warm glow of self-righteousness that day.

WhereYouLeftIt · 05/02/2014 10:07

I've had many occasions travelling at 30mph in a loud car with moron pedestrians waving and shouting slow down - it just shows how shit the general public are at judging speed."^

Many occasions? Sounds like there's a clue there Hmm.

Greydog · 05/02/2014 10:18

I hate bad driving, and using the phone whilst driving is my pet hate. But, having worked for a company that needed van/lorry drivers I felt sorry for the pressure they were under to get from job to job. They had trackers in the vans as well, so often they'd be called to the managers office to explain why they hadn't moved their vehicle for some time (ever heard of a traffic jam, jobsworth?) Why did it take them so long to get from A-B etc. So, I think that some drivers are between the devil and the deep blue sea. (this company didn't supply hands free phones either, or sat navs)

Bartman · 05/02/2014 10:43

Well several certainly. But at bang on 30 in 30 limits. I rarely drive at the speed limit these days though.

clarksonforPM · 05/02/2014 10:44

A huge number of posts on this thread really are boardering on the absolutley chuffing ridiculous scale !

Eating a banana, eating lunch in a P&C space - phoning the police when you really have NO idea how fast they were going !

Bonkers, 'effing bonkers the lot of you.

normalishdude · 05/02/2014 10:52

... they were going faster than 50 mph for sure. How do I know this? Because I have been driving for 25 years, and do 60k miles a year for work.

Come back with the calibration certificate for your eyeballs.

normalishdude · 05/02/2014 11:10

now you are just being silly

Eating a banana is dangerous when there's thick ice on the road, as that means you only have one hand on the wheel. More chance of a serious accident, there.

SirChenjin · 05/02/2014 16:04

Are there really people who are unable to tell when someone is driving at excessive speed through a residential area? Hmm

Bartman · 05/02/2014 16:25

Very clearly in my experience.

SirChenjin · 05/02/2014 19:09

Unbelievable - esp. when you consider how obvious it is.

Stinkyminkymoo · 05/02/2014 19:51

I know when most people are speeding because I can hear it.

I have often been riding my horse on the road (yes, I know - bridle paths are few and far between nowadays Hmm) and can tell if someone is coming up too fast behind me. The look of shock on their face when they see a horse and rider decked out in hiviz usually confirms my suspicions. Wink

I would love one of those digital speed thingys in my village, sadly it looks like we'll have to wait for someone to get hit by a car instead Hmm

NewtRipley · 05/02/2014 19:52

My heart bleeds for the speeding wankers.

NewtRipley · 05/02/2014 19:55

clarkson

People who have ever driven a car and are in possession of a brain are able to guage the difference between 30 and 40, 50 or 60.

NewtRipley · 05/02/2014 19:58

OOOP, my post above was not to clarkson, it was for Bartman

SirChenjin · 05/02/2014 21:00

I like to play 'guess the speed of the car in front' when driving through villages with those cameras that tell you how fast you are going. I'm very rarely out by more than a few mph, thanks to years and years of driving experience.
