To ask how do you get your DC to take fish oil willingly?

treetomfu · 03/02/2014 10:30

We're on a manor health kick in our house after a month of colds and flu.

Have bought Vegapa fish oil supplements for the children, but they refuse to take them. I've tried squeezing the fish oil out of the capsule and putting it on on a spoonful of jelly or fruit yoghurt, but still no luck.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks? DC are 6 and 4 so it's not easy to fool them anymore!

Never occurred to me to give these to my kids! Do people do this?

Ambassadoryouarespoilingme · 03/02/2014 10:35

I was talked into (made to feel v guilty) buying some fish oil capsules for my daughter to help her excema, by a lady in Neal's Yard. They are kids fish oil capsules, taste of orange and the capsules are in fish shapes. 20 sodding quid for a bottle, but her skin was very sore. She can't get enough of them and calls them fish sweets.
If you don't want to buy another brand, you could try bribing them with a Fruit Pastille chaser?!

hootloop · 03/02/2014 10:37

Mine don't take supplements anymore, they finally have a good enough diet, but when they did bribery was the the only answer.

OHforSUCKSsfake · 03/02/2014 10:42

Feed them fish instead, oily fish. Thats what I do.

falulahthecat · 03/02/2014 10:48

What reason are they giving for not taking them? Also, the capsule is what stops it tasting yucky. I think you may have lost the battle the day you squeezed it out.

Are you taking them yourself at the same time?
I used to see my mum taking supplements and it made me want to have them too - not sure all that evening primrose was necessary for a 12 year old but there you go!

falulahthecat · 03/02/2014 10:49

Actually, evening primrose oil is also very good for eczema and smells quite pleasant

falulahthecat · 03/02/2014 10:51

Also -have you tried having her on a non-dairy diet? Could be hogwash but have a friend whose eczema cleared up once she went cows milk free.

My two DSs (6 and 9) both take the haliborange omega 3 oils and have done for years - they treat them like they are being given a sweet! They do also regularly eat fish though and both like fish (not just fish fingers Grin ).

The haliborange ones are sold in Boots and are always on a 3 for 2.

lemon-pack-of-30?utmsource=google&utmmedium=shopping&utmcampaign=GoogleShop&$ja=cgid:5469211749|tsid:45416|cid:113219349|lid:18283950120|nw:{ifsearch:search}{ifcontent:content}|crid:18293365989|dvc:{device}|adp:{adposition}|bku:1&gclid=CKigtbXlr7wCFYWWtAodNmsA0A

These contain the Omega 3 that fish oils do. My DS liked them.

Impatientismymiddlename · 03/02/2014 10:58

Equazen eye q fish oil supplements come in child friendly strawberry flavoured capsules.

matilda101 · 03/02/2014 11:00

I agree with feeding them oily fish!

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 03/02/2014 11:03

Why fish oil?

It honestly wouldn't have occurred to me to give supplements to children, or at least to children with no deficiencies identified by a doctor.

treetomfu · 03/02/2014 11:04

Thank you everyone, the sweetie chaser might do it. We did try in the capsule but they didn't like that either.

I cook fish 2-3 times a week, I suppose I'm just trying to get them super healthy to get over this horrible bout of colds we've had.

I do take supplements, pregnacare and extra iron as I'm expecting. They wanted to try those so I let them bite into a big green one. They taste pretty revolting if not swallowed whole so their faces were a picture ...

Thanks for the links to other brands which I will try, but only once we've finished these as they were £20 so they will be eaten!

The equazen strawberry chews are the ones DS takes willingly as well, well he's 17, he'll take any, but they're the only ones he says taste ok.

wishful75 · 03/02/2014 11:10

I thought there was some recent research with fish oil and aggressive prostate cancer. A significant risk from what I remember.

I would be very cautious personally.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/02/2014 11:18

My DS has been taking the lemon liquid Equazen one from a spoon reasonably happily for several years. We tried the strawberry capsules but he wouldn't have them, I used them and found they go down ok but you get fishy repeats an hour later.

LackingEnergy · 03/02/2014 11:20

malt and cod liver oil is nice it's not a tablet though

equinox · 03/02/2014 11:21

My son hates most tablets/chewies etc. but I put liquid ones in his weetabix and then add a spot of brown suger, bit naughty maybe but it works!

skitter · 03/02/2014 11:44

I take my vitamins at the same time as my 3.5 year old ds, who is a fussy eater. That seems to encourage him. He has strawberry flavoured fish shaped capsules and has decided that they are filled with 'jam' so therefore loves them.

MerryMarigold · 03/02/2014 11:51

We give them to ds1 because he has some development delay and it was recommended. I did see an improvement. The first week or so was awful. Even tried in honey. I taught him how to swallow a pill using tic tacs! Took a few goes, but he got it in the end. For a while he may take a couple of swallows to swallow it. Ds2 (5) got it very quickly but we don't give them to him as he seems to be rather brilliant without them. I give all 3 kids Abidec multi vitamins and have seen a marked improvement in coughs and colds this Winter. They have only had 1 each and not a bad one at that. Coincidence? Maybe.

I was giving the jelly-ish ones for a short while but then I read the amount of ingredients and stopped, especially for ds1 who has moderate adhd anyway. Abidec has very little added. We put it in a shot glass of fruit juice in the morning. My kids are 8 and 5yo twins and I do regret not doing the vits earlier for ds1. I was always of the 'if they eat healthily enough, it is not necessary'. But ds1 does have eating issues so although he eats healthy foods, I'm not sure he's covering all the bases.

DescribeTheRuckus · 03/02/2014 11:51

Changing to a super healthy diet should really make the need for supplements unnecessary...they are children! IF they are eating whole, real foods, sleeping well and getting plenty of fresh air and exercise, then that should be enough. Children get colds...supplements won't change that.

MerryMarigold · 03/02/2014 11:53

I'd like to see some of you get oily fish down ds1!!! Aha ha ha ha ha.

Weelady77 · 03/02/2014 12:10

In yogurt
