I took my toddler swimming today. Afterwards we went to the cafe and put our bags down at a table and dd played with some toys while I looked at the menu. It is a place where you can't order food unless you have a table number so we left swim bag there/coats on chairs/toys on table and went to the till to order. When we returned a woman was sitting at our table and had removed all our belongings to a nearby shelf. The conversation went like this:
Me: Excuse me, we were sitting here.
Her: Were, perhaps. Now I am.
Me: I have just ordered food to come to this table and there are no others suitable for a highchair.
Her: (shrugs) Like you say, there are other tables so off you go. You weren't sitting here so I chose to.
Me: You cannot order food here without a table number and I cannot be in two places at once.
Her: Not really my problem is it, love.

At which point I retrieved our belongings and sat myself and dd down.

Her: What do you think you're doing?!
Me: Sitting at our table waiting for our lunch.
Her: But my husband and son are sitting there!
Me: Were, perhaps. Now we are.
Her: But they're expecting me to be here.
Me: Not really my problem is it, love.

She gets up huffily removing her belongings and mutters that maybe I'll be less cranky when dd is older and I get more sleep (!) and I replied: perhaps. Shame you'll still be a prat!

My sister was meeting us there after lunch and saw the woman scowling at me so I explained what'd been said. She was blushing on my behalf and said I should've just moved and can't go round calling strangers prats. Wibu?

Not at all, you handled it beautifully.

shoofly · 03/02/2014 09:53

High fives - am in awe - I would've moved and fumed. I like your approach much more Grin

AlwaysDancing1234 · 03/02/2014 09:53

Just brilliant! If I had witness this I may have whooped and given you a round of applause, I hate people like that! Grin

RubyGoat · 03/02/2014 09:54

Brilliant! You're my hero! Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/02/2014 09:54

What aquashiv said, the 'prat' bit was superfluous - it was a perfect response without that.

laughingeyes2013 · 03/02/2014 09:56

Haha - good for you!

I loved every bit of your response, and no, you are not being in the slightest bit unreasonable! Everyone knows that if you have to give a table number then you HAVE to bag your seats.

She obviously doesn't get out much!

Foxred10 · 03/02/2014 09:58

Nicely handled! Wink You were totally in the right, and very restrained in only calling her a prat Smile

tracypenisbeaker · 03/02/2014 10:01

Will you marry me OP, because I actually love you.

Nanny0gg · 03/02/2014 10:04

Well done!

You need to start an MN Masterclass in How to Handle prats idiots!

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/02/2014 10:25

Ywnbu!

She was ridiculous.

desertmum · 03/02/2014 10:58

another high five from me! NU at all

clarksonforPM · 03/02/2014 11:13

That made me crack up ! - Would have love to have seen her face, hahahahaha

Birdsgottafly · 03/02/2014 11:16

You were right to stand your ground, I would of done the same.

You also retained the higher moral ground by not swearing.

If you had of, she could of complained and tbh, if there were other children around, you could (should of) been asked to leave.

You can make a point without carrying on like someone off Jeremy Kyle.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 03/02/2014 11:16

Well done, great response Smile

newyearhere · 03/02/2014 11:19

Well done OP! Grin

DuckandCat · 03/02/2014 11:22

OP you are fantastic Smile

OpalQuartz · 03/02/2014 11:27

No I think you dealt with it perfectly OP

Felyne · 03/02/2014 11:29

I think you're awesome. I can't believe that woman.

CatAssTrophy · 03/02/2014 11:31

Brilliant! I wonder what would have happened had she been really, really stubborn and refused to shift. Maybe you would have all had a very nice lunch together. Grin

EllaFitzgerald · 03/02/2014 11:34

Brilliantly handled! That's the sort of thing I would have thought about doing hours later. I would have given you a round of applause if I'd seen that.

GreenShadow · 03/02/2014 11:39

Absolutely perfectly handled!
Well done you.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 03/02/2014 11:41

YANBU. I'm impressed that you had the presence of mind to say all that at the time rather than thinking of it hours later.

prettybird · 03/02/2014 11:45

YANBU. Impressed at your retorts.

I called a taxi driver a prat recently when he pulled up onto the cycle apron alongside me at a red light to berate me for having had the audacity to stop my bike in front of him on the cycle apron and not squeezed in to the left. Confused

MomentForLife · 03/02/2014 11:51

Yanbu! Well done for telling her.

How the hell would anyone ever be able to order to the correct table if weirdos just move you're stuff while you order.

I would probably shown myself up and sworn at her.

walterwhiteswife · 03/02/2014 11:52
