To Be Really Angry at the Butterkist Company & Want to Complain & by E-mail

RockinHippy · 01/02/2014 20:19

Not some poxy PO.Box address as written on the packetAngry

I have very ill DD, who has spent the last 3 hours either doubled up with stomach pain or pebble dashing the toilet :(

Worse still its as the result of a cheer up treat I bought as she has a fractured elbow, cast shoulder to fingers & is fed up :(
Very bad as she's at an age where she is easily embarrassed & is now trying to sort herself out in the toilet with raging diarrhoea & her main arm in plaster :(

I bought her the Cinema Sweet Microwave popcorn, because the shop didn't have her favourited salted version & I know she likes this too. I know that the non microwave bags are fine as they don't contain any artificial sweeteners, I also know that the toffee popcorn version is fine too. I'm pretty sure the sweet microwave version USED to be fine. Its not anymore, but contains an artificial sweetener that lists abdominal problems as a side effect, one that DD is very sensitive to, one that along with other sweeteners, diabetic products carry a warning not to eat too much of fir precisely this reason, yet none diabetic, non sugar free stuff sneaks these sweetener in without any warning or clear labelling that they are there at all Angry

I feel like crap excuse the pun because I trusted a brand we knew & didn't read the small print on a day I was suffering with migraine eyes & probably couldn't have read the tiny print if I had tried.

AIBU to be upset & fuming & ask if anyone has a direct email address for this company :)

There's a contact form and telephone number here or you could contact them by facebook

PedlarsSpanner · 01/02/2014 20:27

Oh that is awful

poor DD, don't beat self up though

CiderBomb · 01/02/2014 20:32

I'm not really sure how this is the companies fault to be honest? It's not there fault that you didn't read the label properly.

Complain by all means, but I can't see you getting very far.

RockinHippy · 01/02/2014 20:51

ODFO Cider Hmm

I'd like to see how you would feel if it was your DCAngry

& yes the company can do it by law, but it doesn't mean they should, if diabetic confectionary producers can clearly label that their products contain artificial sweeteners & should be eaten only in small amounts or risk abdominal problems, then why should companies sneaking them into once safe products not have the same decencyHmm

Thank you Truth that's a fantastic help - I hadn't thought of Facebook :)

Thank you too Pedlar (& anyone else I xpost with :))

I agree cider. Those of us with special dietary requirements should always read the labels and take nothing for granted. It's a mistake you only make once.

OP I don't think you should be getting arsey with cider, as far as responsibility goes it was yours.

Sorry about Dd but telling a poster to fuck off isn't on.

Try contacting them on facebook as a pp says they could definitely make it more clear if this is a known problem/side affect.

Hope she feels better soon.

RockinHippy · 01/02/2014 20:58

So Joy do you read EVERY label, EVERY time you go shopping ??

Or do you trust the products & labels you know & read the new products only ??

If so well done you for not having the curse of ocular migraine & having to get on & do the shopping anyway & having a life that affords you that much time Hmm

YANBU. I noticed that walkers crisps had a big swirly thing saying 'check my ingredients' on the front of the pack when they changed the recipe of their salt and vinegar flavour- which my colleague was very grateful for as it meant she noticed the addition of something she is sensitive to.

Why can't all companies do this when they change their recipe?

DoJo · 01/02/2014 21:10

Rockinhippy - you are obviously very upset, and I think everyone can understand why, but perhaps AIBU wasn't the place for this post.

As someone who suffers from allergies, I do know that checking labels is a pain in the arse, and you do only expect to have to do it on new products, but it's not foolproof and if you get caught out then you have to take it on the chin and change your shopping habits. I suspect that you feel worse because it was you that purchased it and your daughter who is suffering, and the circumstances under which it was purchased just add to the wretchedness, but honestly, I am not sure that you have cause for a complaint of the type your OP suggests.
Perhaps writing to them and suggesting that they clearly label products which have changed as 'NEW RECIPE' somewhere prominent might have the desired effect.

RockinHippy · 01/02/2014 21:13

I usually do prefer to, but have ran out TheDrugs not always so easy to get close to home, the supermarkets don't sell it & the places that do are the opposite side of town to us, which isn't always easy, though after this I will make sure its that or nothing, she is so ill, its awful :(

I wish they would chronic I've seen it happen with crisps before, but thankfully I ate one before she did hers & tasted the artificial aftertaste, if they can change the ingredients on the label, then its not like they aren't already paying to have new packaging printed & can't just add a warning as walkers did

Your poor daughter. But frankly, you should have read the label. Your own fault.

moondog · 01/02/2014 21:16

Oh FFS.
So your migraine is their fault is it?
Get a grip.
My kid also has a condition that means I have to read every label.
So I do.

ateddybearfromdelaware1 · 01/02/2014 21:19

If she's so sensitive to a particular ingredient, you should've read it. Simple.

nicky2512 · 01/02/2014 21:22

Poor thing. I hope she is ok soon. I have to check everything for gluten for DD and while I'm not arguing with the fact that it is my responsibility to do so, manufacturers could make it a bit easier. Some companies very clearly state a list of ingredients that could be a problem but with some you would need a magnifying glass. It all needs to be made much clearer.

moondog · 01/02/2014 21:27

Just take a pair of bloody glasses with you.
Or if you are too disorganised to do so, ask someone else to read the packet.
Truly what is known as a 1st world problem.

TalkieToaster · 01/02/2014 21:33

You're upset, it's understandable. It's still your fault though and I can't see your complaint getting very far at all.

To play devil's advocate: What response would you consider to be a reasonable one from Butterkist?

namechangesforthehardstuff · 01/02/2014 21:34

Gosh the harshness here is Shock fairly sure OP didn't poison her dd on purpose. Not sure that serious allergies are a first world problem, not altogether sure that telling someone to 'fuck off' is as massive an AIBU crime as it's being made out to be...

following · 01/02/2014 21:40

agree with cider tbh if your dd is that sensitive to certain things you should check everything.

arselikekylie · 01/02/2014 21:41

Just put it down to experience and don't buy it again.
Not the companies fault your daughter is sensitive to the ingredients.

LolaDontCryOnDogTails · 01/02/2014 21:56

namechange i think it's the fact OP is being pretty rude.
Sympathy isn't hugely forthcoming when you are rude to other posters.
It's AIBU people may not agree with you, if their only crime is not agreeing with you a fuck off is (usually) uncalled for.

How long do you think she will be unwell for OP?
Is there anything you can do to make her comfortable or do you just have to wait it out?

namechangesforthehardstuff · 01/02/2014 22:05

Yeah Lola but it's hardly unusual for someone to do a ODFOD on a post is it? And I'd hate for dd to have an allergy - my friend's dd has a really serious one and it's an utter PITA, all the bloody time planning any little thing because of it. Must be awful Sad

BIWI · 01/02/2014 22:09

But what do you want them to do if you complain? They have complied with the law by putting the information on the back of the pack.

I'm really sorry that your DD was so ill, and that you had a migraine, but surely if your DD is so sensitive then you should be ultra careful about what she eats and therefore would make sure that you always read the back-of-pack labels?

YABU, I'm afraid.

LolaDontCryOnDogTails · 01/02/2014 22:14

Not unusual at all as long as it is deserved Grin
Just think OP is feeling peeved...
