AIBU to want to ask the neighbours for money?

We are in the middle of moving house. We have loads of accumulated crap, mostly in the garage, so we have hired a skip to get rid of it.

The skip is directly outside the house (we don't have front gardens, the front doors open onto the street) and has been there since Tuesday. Since then, our next-door neighbours have been chucking their rubbish into it. The skip is about 20 yards from their wheely bin. There is probably about a quarter of the skip now full of their shit empty beer cans and stuff.

The skip cost us £180 to hire. AIBU to want to knock on their door and ask for £45 to cover the cost of the bit they've filled.

(I do know this is an occupational hazard of having a skip, and I wouldn't have minded if they'd just asked!)

YABU.

Take their rubbish back out and chuck it over their back fence. Much more satisfying.

MadIsTheNewNormal · 01/02/2014 18:16

Not at all! Or just take the stuff back out and stick it on their doorstep. Cheeky gits. Honestly, the front of some people just amazes me.

YouTheCat · 01/02/2014 18:16

Take their stuff out and start posting it back through their letter box or put it in their bin.

sugar4eva · 01/02/2014 18:17

i wouldnt ask for money now it s done up to this point - but id either say if you want to put more in could we split the cost of the skip ?Or would ask skip company tp provide a skip net/cover .

elismom · 01/02/2014 18:17

I think I would not be happy if ndn had a skip outside my door for 5 days.
Maybe get it moved?

LadyBeagleEyes · 01/02/2014 18:22

Why on earth not elismom, how else are they going to clear their house?
I'd be furious Op, I'd take their stuff out too and go round to tell them how much it cost.

SelectAUserName · 01/02/2014 18:23

Saucyjack I like your style. Grin

Elismom there isn't anywhere to move it to. We've put it where we usually park our car (never any problem getting parked, it's a quiet street with several elderly residents who don't drive) and are parking our car round the corner. If we put it round the back we'd be blocking the access to the other garages - it's a detached block of six and we have the end one.

Are you sure it's them?

Scholes34 · 01/02/2014 18:25

Start to clear stuff in the house that needs chucking. Hire the skip. Put the rubbish in the skip once the skip arrives and then arrange for it to be moved as soon as possible. That way, no-one beats you to the skip. If you're only going to fill the remaining 3/4 of the skip, not a problem. If you need more space, should have taken action earlier.

wightjellybaby · 01/02/2014 18:28

you're not aloud to put ur rubbish in someone elses bin/skip take photo of them doing it and you can call your council and theyll get them done for fly tipping. We have issues with people filling our bins like that my council told us to get proof of whos doing it and they can press charges

Quoteunquote · 01/02/2014 18:30

It is illegal to put anything in a skip without permission, it is also illegal to take anything from a skip without permission.

but if anyone puts something in your skip, it is your responsibility to dispose of it responsibly, you cannot take it out and put it on the highway, you will be prosecuted for fly tipping.

because of the above as a construction contractor I no longer use skips,

you paid the amount because your waste is unsorted,

in every single area now there are specialist collectors (ring up the local council and check who has a licence, as if they don't and you use them, you can be prosecuted), you don't have to sort the rubbish , but the price goes down significantly if you do,

You would of paid about two thirds the price unsorted, and half sorted, and they turn up as often as needed and take it away.

I suggest if you really are bothered you explain to your neighbours that you need a significant contribution or you will speak to the police.

or if you will still be able to fit it all in, chalk it down to a learning experience and make sure you use a approved collector in future.

hiddenhome · 01/02/2014 18:33

You have to take a pillow and sleeping bag and actually camp out in your skip to prevent it from being filled by other people.

Take a torch and baseball bat with you so you can shock them by jumping up when they dump their stuff. Chase them down the street with the bat yelling and screaming.

They'll never do clandestine dumping again Wink

SelectAUserName · 01/02/2014 18:37

Yes, we're sure it's them. The fact that every bag seems to contain beer cans and pizza boxes, and their bin - which is usually overflowing with beer cans and pizza boxes by this point in the week - is mysteriously empty (we're not bin monitors btw, but we live at the end of a short terrace and all the bins are lined up beside our garden gate so we walk past every time we take the dog out).

*Scholes that would have been the ideal and was closer to the original plan, which was to have it collected on Thursday, but I had to spend a couple of days away from home mid-week unexpectedly (family illness) and my DH is too unwell to clear everything in the original timescale so we rang the skip company and extended the time we've got it.

Just dump it in their garden or back yard.

One of our neighbours had the audacity to dump a discarded gnome in our skip Hmm

Dh took it back to him and he was Shock

XiCi · 01/02/2014 18:47

I would have spoken to the neighbours as soon as you noticed and asked them not to put any more stuff in as you need the full skip.

You need to speak to them ASAP before they start putting more of their rubbish in.

HeadfirstThroughTheTimeVortex · 01/02/2014 18:51

I would dump every last bit back on their doorstep.

Bowlersarm · 01/02/2014 18:54

Let it go OP.

Be thankful you are moving away and won't have to see them again.

However this is one of life's lessons. When you have a skip, make sure you have everything to hand immediately to fill it up with your stuff. Otherwise every other bugger thinks it's their right to only chuck a little something of theirs in.

Hunfriend · 01/02/2014 18:57

Put it in their empty bin !

Thebluedog · 01/02/2014 19:00

Cheeky fuckers! I think I'd make a sarcastic comment next time I see them, asking when they are going to give you half the hire price of the skip, as they've been putting their crap in it.

HildaOgden · 01/02/2014 19:01

I'd bag it all up now, have the skip collected and on the day of moving I would very kindly return their pocessions to them.Grin

TheWitTank · 01/02/2014 19:06

Agree with taking every little bit back out and sticking it all in a bin bag/bags. When your skip goes, take the bin bags and stick them on their doorstep (not before or they will probably stick them back in!). Cheeky feckers.

LottieJenkins · 01/02/2014 19:07

We had a skip recently when our bathroom was revamped. One neighbour (an elderly lady) asked if she could put three carrier bags of videos in and I said yes. A friend asked if she could put a sofa in and I said NO!!!!!!!
