To be a bit upset with the nurse?

DC3 went for her 13 month injections yesterday, we went into the nurses room and the 3 injections were all ready on her desk. She told me what they were for etc and said if she gets a fever give calpol and if she has any trouble breathing to whip her up to A & E etc etc, everything that is usually said.

I then asked her if due to my dd's allergies would she be more likely to have an allergic reaction? To which nurse replied 'oh no the two aren't normally linked she's no more likely than anyone else, I mean it's not like she has an allergy to egg or anything' (she does and had to be taken to hospital because of breathing difficulties after eating one)

I told the nurse this and she started stuttering about maybe the hospital hadn't sent these notes but then she found them right there on my daughters notes! So we now have to have her MMR jab done at the hospital which is fine but AIBU to think that I shouldn't have had to flag this up and there should have been an alert on DD's file.

I've since read on the internet that infact the MMR isn't that dangerous for egg allergy sufferers but they like to do it in a hospital environment just in case. But had it not been for my innocent question I would never have even known

Yanbu. However as others have said I have never been asked about a allergies when any of my dcs had their injections.

Yes, she should indeed have checked. It was a screw up.

SauvignonBlanche · 01/02/2014 13:38

I can see why you are concerned, but you don't know that they weren't just about to ask.

OodlesofOodles · 01/02/2014 14:14

It seems a waste getting it set up prior to checking.
I would also check the allergy is recorded on her file , I found some of my minor ones weren't as they'd been discovered in hospital.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 01/02/2014 14:24

Definitely a screw up, either hers or with your notes.

She should have checked the notes and then she made herself sound stupid by giving the wrong answer to a question, and her answer made the assumption that your child wasn't allergic to eggs.

LaGuardia · 01/02/2014 16:13

I am baffled why anyone who would want their child to have the MMR jab when that child has already demonstrated a reaction to something as mild as egg. My DD, a fit and healthy child with absolutely no allergies, was rushed to hospital after her 1st MMR jab, so I guess you are going to the right place to have it.

Iwannalaylikethisforever · 01/02/2014 16:25

It doesn't contain egg. The doctor told us the vaccine was grown from egg cultures in the past but is perfectly safe. hospital is a precaution. My dc suffered anaphylactic shock from egg amongst other things and was fine having it. (In hospital) it was an awful lot of waiting around though.
Glad it's sorted for you. I always see it as my responsiblilty to mention her allergies.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/02/2014 16:26

Nothing like scaremongering.

Dd has a severe egg allergy and was fine after hers.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/02/2014 16:26

My post was to la Guardia.

YANBU, but a couple of points

  • did the hospital give you advice about being cautious about your DD having the MMR with a suspected egg allergy?
  • the nurse is sensible to draw up the vaccines before you enter the room. It takes time to prepare them correctly, checking the dose and batch numbers and it's often safer to do it without distraction.
-all serious allergies should be on her notes. -she should've checked that she was fit and well and asked about any contraindications before giving it. We all make mistakes, I expect she'll use it as a learning tool.
Dinosaurdrip · 01/02/2014 16:43

We'll I'm glad the general consensus is that I'm not just being extremely precious! I think I will just mention it to the practice, I'm sure she will be absolutely fine with the jab but I'd rather be safe than sorry. She did type in her notes about the allergy I think but both the hospital and the paramedics report were definitely in her notes.
