To think organising nights out at work is a mugs game

So I normally take a back seat in organising nights out at work as am very strapped for time. But decided to step up and take a turn but its a thankless task, no? Grin

It's the worst job and very under appreciated.
Maybe its just me but I would happily socialise with half my colleagues and I detest spending precious free time with the rest.
You also have to contend with the fact that its 'an extension of the work place' and all the associated pressure that brings.

Bloody hell yes YANBU!

rookiemater · 31/01/2014 22:29

YANBU. Organised our works christmas lunch, collected deposits from everyone, had a spreadsheet with their menu choices.

Most people couldn't remember what they ordered (good job I had the spreadsheet Grin). Didn't get a thank you or acknowledgement from the guy in charge of our team, grr.

AntiJamDidi · 31/01/2014 22:33

YANBU at all. We're trying to organise a night out for our department at work and the clashes of date and the "I can't make that night/I go away at weekends it has to be in the week/why are you planning on going there?" etc is ridiculous. I'm so glad it's a colleague who's organising it and not me.

AlpacaPicnic · 31/01/2014 22:53

I've done it a couple of times... Just enough to forget how awful it was last time and volunteer again!

The only way I'll do it now is to make it a 'in or out' system - such as I will book a table at xxx restaurant, on xxx day, at xxx o'clock put your name down if you want to go. If you don't like my plans, feel free to make your own'

I adopted that approach after certain people moaned about not going out but nobody wanted to set it up themselves.

Beamur · 31/01/2014 22:54

YANBU totally thankless. Almost everyone will moan, or give you various and difficult to reconcile requirements - somewhere near the station/no cheese/not too expensive etc...

iklboo · 31/01/2014 22:58

YANBU. Half of the team want to to to WAG wannabe places where they can slap on four inches of make up, pout & drink bloody prosecco (everywhere else is a 'dive'), some only want to go to artisan beer places where a pizza is £15+ and others to a spit & sawdust 'don't care where as long as it's cheap'. Never. Again.

iklboo · 31/01/2014 22:59

Oh, and the vegetarian who doesn't eat most vegetables and only likes chips or cheese butties.

AnUnearthlyChild · 31/01/2014 23:01

rookie out spreadsheet meister goes one further! she makes up stickers with each persons name and menu choices and hands them out on the night.

I was in awe when I saw her in action for the first time!

rookiemater · 01/02/2014 11:34

Dammit unearthly - now I feel forced to take up the gauntlet at Christmas time again, just so I can do the stickers thing !

Merlotmonster · 01/02/2014 13:16

Rookie ! hilarious!
