My DD1 is in yr 7 at a local state secondary. They are having a massive refurbishment/rebuild, costing 40million pounds. It is a huge project and in desperate need as the old school is in a terrible state. It is amalgamating a few schools with a large SEN unit. Its a brilliant project. The school is now 1500 pupils, I think the new school will be >2000.
I have learnt today that ALL children will be getting personal ipads. This will be for all planners, homework, lesson plans etc Hmm.
Some of DD1's friends have lost numerous planners and books already. Surely they are going to get lost/broken/forgotten to charge etc. It seems a ridiculous extravagence to me. (even if they have by some miracle got a special apple deal).

Are you sure the parents won't be asked to pay for them?

RandyRudolf · 31/01/2014 20:39

Wow, that sounds quite extravagant.

moondog · 31/01/2014 20:40

Once you tot up the cost of books, photocopying, transporting, replacing, there wouldn't be much of a difference.
My dh works in a very poo country where all school books are avaialble online. Much cheaper in the long run for them even.r

To be kept in school, or on loan while they are pupils?

What happens when if they get lost, stolen or damaged?

newmorning · 31/01/2014 20:45

"a very poo country"

Freudian slip?

GoofyIsACow · 31/01/2014 20:49

Wow, it does seem very extravagant but like moondog said i think the cost of the alternative is probably quite high. Trouble is of course that if that badly photocopied piece of paper gets left on the bus/eaten by the dog/dropped in the canal it doesnt matter so much!
