to say that Sky should provide subtitles for On Demand programmes

Sky don't make subtitles available on their On Demand programmes. They could (there's not an issue with file sizes, though they sometimes try to suggest that). But they don't, simply because they don't HAVE to.

It's really frustrating for me and many other people. 1 in 7 people in the UK have hearing impairments. Having subtitles on TV has been a life-changing thing for me - I scarcely ever watched TV before it became widespread a few years ago. Having them there means I can enjoy programmes with the rest of my family. If they're not there, I'm completely excluded. There's legislation that forces terrestrial programming to have a certain level of subtitling, but it doesn't cover a lot of other programming. I don't want another generation of hearing-impaired children to grow up excluded from TV, as I was.

I got sent this petition about it, and encourage you to sign it if you agree.

It amazes me how few programmes (comparatively) are subtitled. I haven't been diagnosed with a hearing impairment, but I sometimes struggle to follow speech when there is background noise, so I use subtitles. Comedy central, for example, never seem to have working subtitles; neither do several of the documentary channels on sky. Completely unacceptable.

I don't NEED subtitles. But I like to have them on. And yes it is annoying enough for me when I realise that the program I am watching is on demand and not been recorded to find out that subtitles are not available.

Messy English sorry. But you get my drift.

WooWooOwl · 31/01/2014 17:00

I'd sign if I could, but I don't think I can on that link.

In know it doesn't solve the problem with Sky, but if they are refusing to help, then perhaps changing to a provider which does could be an option. In my experience, Virgin and Talk Talk both have subtitles for programmes which are available on demand (if they had them originally, if you see what I mean!).

I don't need subs, DH does, but I'm so used to them now I can't watch anything without them.

it pisses me off when things don't have subtitles, it should be a standard requirement.

I have auditory processing disorder, so although I can hear that people are talking I can't necessarily tell what they're saying. I always use subtitles.

What's infuriating is when the subtitles exist (that is, they were available if you watched it live) but they haven't stuck them to the OD version Angry

Signed.

Thanks to all those who have signed, and please do pass on to your friends/family. It would be nice if Sky saw the strength of feeling about this. They make a big play of their 'accessibility' but it is a joke if they leave On Demand inaccessible.

WooWoo - sorry about link, I posted it again just below my OP, but here it is again.

I use subtitles all the time, but do not have sky, just freeview. I can't follow a program without them. I would not bother getting a sky package now even if I could afford it

undecidedanduncertain · 02/02/2014 07:37

bearleft - quite a few programmes on sky, including the freeview ones do have subtitles. But not the On demand ones. On Demand is a relatively new service where you can download programmes and watch them whenever you want to, so you aren't limited to when they are broadcast.

I actually think that people with hearing impairments should be entitled to pay less for their Sky subscription since they don't have access to the On Demand programmes.

I agree and not sure why they don't especially when they are ones that have only been recently on TV, with subtitles!
