To think that British Gas should not do this

I might BU to feel annoyed about this. Genuinely I'd like some views.

We have a service contract with British Gas. Over the years it's actually proved quite cost effective and generally the service has been good. For several years now we have mostly had the same man come out when needed.

About 3 weeks ago our dishwasher started leaking. Man came and said he'd try to get a part. Wasn't certain he'd be able to as its quite an old dishwasher. Fair enough. Yesterday he came with the part. DH and I were both out. But we are having building work done so the builders let him in.

The message left by the engineer is that although he got the part the dishwasher will still leak as the door is badly split (he already knew about the door) and so it poses a risk of electrocution; so he has effectively condemned it. And done something to do so it can't be used at all. I don't know what it is that he has done and neither does DH.

British Gas are now offering us 30 percent off a new dishwasher, bought from them - bringing the price down to ordinary high street prices it would seem.

Whilst I like our engineer and whilst I would want to know if our dishwasher was unsafe I don't feel they have the right to 'condemn' our property and render it unuseable without consultation.

Before I speak to them about this I'd like to canvass some views. DH isn't particularly bothered about it and just says if its not safe then we wouldn't want to use it anyway. And I do get that. But AIBU to be a bit annoyed?

I should also have added AIBU to post the dullest AIBU ever!

Hehe! Well if he hadn't Condemned it and someone did get hurt, he would be liable surely?

ShadowOfTheDay · 30/01/2014 15:45

if he has condemned it then there is a real risk to life....

would much rather it went that way than be electrocuted through a stubborn desire to just make do...

gamerchick · 30/01/2014 15:49

the amount of cookers i've had condemned I can well believe it. They can and they do. It's for your own safety and so they can't get the blame for letting you use a dangerous appliance and somebody getting hurt.

Annoying I know.

ShatnersBassoon · 30/01/2014 15:49

What sort of consultation were you expecting? Your opinion counts for nothing.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 30/01/2014 15:52

Thankyou all.

I'm going to agree with DH then. It's not that I'd have used it and put us at risk. More that I felt we should have had a say. Think I'm just a stubborn old woman who doesn't like being told! Thanks for the perspective.

So, he should just have left it and let you get electrocuted?

LaurieFairyCake · 30/01/2014 15:56

I don't agree, think it's bullshit.

And British gas have form for this if you look for complaints online.

It's a dishwasher, the other parts are not going to be 'live' round the front - the only way it could possibly electrocute you is if you went round where the plug socket was with your hand wet. Sounds like they're trying to extort money out of you. I would get another engineer.

Fair enough (but there are still loads of complaints) to condemn a leaking gas boiler but a dishwasher?

Juno77 · 30/01/2014 16:01

I actually agree with you entirely.

The engineer may well condemn the machine, but it is your property and he had no right to do something to it than rendered it physically unusable.

LIZS · 30/01/2014 16:04

If you wanted to be consulted you should probably have been there yourself. Is it reparable ? If not shop elsewhere as a protest.
