To have asked this man for my £2 back?

I know you'll say he needed it more than me, but it's still something i can't afford right now. I have no 'free' money until i get paid next Fri. Every penny until then has been accounted for.

I was walking to catch my train home this morning and stopped to give a homeless man a voucher for a free sandwich that I'd been handed earlier this morning. My hands were freezing, so as i was trying to uncrumple it from another receipt, a £2 coin fell out of it and onto his lap. He pocketed it and thanked me.

I felt like shit but apologised and said that actually i was meaning to give him the voucher instead (and explained the shop was just a five minute walk away), and could i have my money back please.

He gave me it back but didn't take my voucher either. He seemed really offended actually.

I feel really crappy. That money is for dd's disco ticket for tomorrow night. I think he thinks i was taking the piss out of him.

You were kind to have given him a voucher. He was kind to give you back your coin.

YANBU if you need it you need it.

I dont give cash to beggers on the street anyway you don't know what they're going to spend it on. That said I DO buy them food / cups of tea, pay for bus tickets from time to time if they get on bus with me and once even booked someone into a B&B over night as it was below freezing and there was no way I could bring myself to leave a teenage girl on the streets at 9pm. (In her case I went back the next morning and we manged to track down her aunt who came to get her)

YNBU. Agree with ProfPlumspeaking you were both kind. Don't feel guilty about it. You needed the money for your DD. I only ever offer to buy drinks and food no. It comes after one man was so offended at the change Igave him (loose silver out my pocket) he threw it back at me! Confused.

Agree you shouldn't feel guilty, but it sounds like a sketch from a comedy show Grin
