..to blame DH for dreadful stink on sofas!

We have an elderly cat with hyperthyroidism and a very active and stinky bowel! She did go through a phase of pooing on the carpets and rug in the living room and on our bed. We have now become very diligent about keeping all doors closed so the cat doesn't have access to the rooms on her own - and the problem seemed to have stopped.
Last week DH was last up so shut all the doors before coming up to bed. DS was first up in the morning and went down to watch TV. When he opened the living room door he found that the cat had been locked inside all night. She'd pooed on one sofa and wee-d all over the other. I spent the weekend cleaning and scrubbing (using a carpet and upholstery cleaning machine) - but the smell is still there!
DH now tells me this morning that he feels very hurt that I seem to be blaming him for this.
I recognise that it was an accident - but I would have liked him to accept some responsibility for it. He knew (or should have done by now) to check the cat wasn't in the room before closing the door!
Am I being unreasonable?

It sounds like this was an accident so I would let it go...unless of course he does it on a regular basis. Mistakes do happen and it could have happened to you. I would have asked him to help with the cleaning though.

I don't see why you were the one who had to spend the weekend cleaning and scrubbing! I agree it was an accident but he should take some responsibility.

This is beside the point but in your situation, if your cat is still enjoying life, I would consider buying something to cover the sofa with on a semi permanent basis...I would also shut all the upstairs doors! When we had to look after a smelly dog, I put a soft waterproof sheet on our sofa and then a massive, thick throw...one I could machine wash. It kept the sofa safe...I took all the loose covers off before I covered it up.

Buy some special stuff from the pet shop. Wee, poo and vom needs a cleaner that breaks down organic nasties.
Your Hubby should have been more careful but these things happen.

I think he'd realise he should have checked more thoroughly but cats go in the strangest of places and ours have been shut in on numerous occasions by all members of the family.

Yes you're annoyed about the sofa, but people make mistakes and hopefully when you make mistakes people are more understanding!

That then brings us onto what he can do to try and take responsibility? Tell him what you think can can do and let him get on with it. That's all that needs to happen and I don't see what's so complicated?

Our old cat threw up on DHs' pillow once. He laid his head in cold sick in the dark! Another of mine shat in DH's Croc. I reckon he was letting DH know that Crocs on men are NEVER ok! Grin

I was just really having a winge.

AwfulMaureen the cat does seem to have a good quality of life. We do now keep upstairs rooms shut. We also put the stair gate back on to prevent her going upstairs. The vet recommended Fellaway plug-ins and they have stopped some of the worse behaviour. Nothing stops her awful smell though.
I have bought some Mister Muscle pet stain and odour spray today - and fingers crossed! If it doesn't work it looks like we'll have to get a cheap second hand replacement sofa. We cannot get a new one until the cat has gone - we thought she'd reached the end last year but now looks as healthy as she ever did (even though she's 18!) - so that may be a while.

If the odour spray doesn't work, try dissolving a biological washing powder tablet in hot water and sponge the spot thoroughly.
