We got the change4life booklet home today in book bags which I read through as sometimes has good recipes.

The advice was to switch from full fat milk to skimmed or 1% milk and from butter to low fat spread. I had thought that recent studies show that full fat dairy is actually better for you - especially for children.

AIBU to think change4life information is out of date - does anyone know??

So, I would choose a sugary yoghurt over one with sweeteners, but even better would be plain yoghurt with added fruit.

If I really wanted a sweet drink I would have a full sugar version, but only occasionally as a treat.

Arg my post from last night doesn't make sense!!

I meant I disagree that healthy advice is obvious. Some posters are actively avoiding fat (ie butter) and advocating that as a healthy diet, yet there is a thread on healthy snacks actively promoting adding double cream to yoghurt, adding butter etc.

I personally eat Greek yogurt as I prefer things to have fewer ingredients.

It doesn't change that some recommend low fat (highsugar) yoghurt yet others suggest full fat. The same people advocating less sugar in yoghurt advocate full sugar drinks.

It seems there's a current battle between seeing fat or Stuart as the enemy. )

I think if you think of real food your granny served it's easier than fat v sugar. (My problem is that my granny did make lovely trifle! Then we are back to noting that was for high Days and holidays only.)

frugalfuzzpig · 31/01/2014 10:43

Yeah that Stuart's a right evil git :o

DaffodilShoots · 31/01/2014 10:51

My friend and I were discussing the latest anti-sugar bandwagon, we failed to spot the anti-Stuart trend as the next big thing in tabloid nutrition!

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 31/01/2014 10:53

HaHa! I'm having a rubbish morning and that's made me giggle at least. I think I may need to give up typing on my phone. Much quicker and more accurate (I hope) on my laptop!

My granny always had cake or biscuits for morning coffee or afternoon tea. Posh family, often victoria sponge or whatever (White flour! White sugar! Butter!). You can be a granny at 32, although my granny is 84 and I take your point - apart from the cake meals are Meat, potato, veg (and lots of butter) for the main part. Bread and egg/meat for lunch.

Wouldn't go with the low carb types but was all real food and often from the garden.

DaffodilShoots · 31/01/2014 11:02

Well in the past posh folk had the plumper members of society among their ranks.

But those with gardens and allotments would have had fresh, vitamin rich food in summer and autumn. I am amazed each time I have access to them just how good fresh lettuce and radish taste from the garden.

DaffodilShoots · 31/01/2014 11:04

My granny was born before the first world war so I do need to adapt that part of my advice. I'll keep working on this as I think I might offer myself as a government adviser!Wink

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 31/01/2014 11:15

Do you think the anti-Stuart thing will catch on? ;)

Most of the summer meals at my Grandparents would be home grown veg and they tasted SO good.

I thought it was just me being a grumpy old bag but frankly I am horrified at the "advice" doled out by these quangos.
I called to complain but as usual in these government departments they claimed it had nothing to do with them and whoever printed the leaflets were just using the logo. I find that scarey that this department does not even appear to be regulated if that is the case!
Scarey that they think that spreads and cheeses full of additives and shit are healthier than a sensible portion of butter as for feeding a 5 year old skimmed milk words fail me!

HoratiaDrelincourt · 06/02/2014 16:58

Who the fuck is producing them then?! Nestle?

lookdeepintotheparka · 06/02/2014 18:45

Scary indeed that the government aren't taking any responsibility for it!! So who is producing this stuff??
