To think I can go to work after my Mirena fitting?

Just that really. I'm getting a Mirena coil next week and I have meetings in the afternoon which I have to go to but after reading up on it I'm now thinking this may be a bit ambitious. Has anyone had one fitted and then fine just to go straight back to work?

Noel! Shock

Please tell me it was at the end of a meeting.

Chair: any other business?

Noel: just one thing... pop

Grin

No really, were you okay?

shouldnthavesaid · 29/01/2014 21:51

I couldn't have - but I spent the night in hospital on every painkiller they offered . fainted twice, had a fever of 39 and had horrible cramps. I've never had children though and was told it was probably down to that. Afaik it's generally quite achy though.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 29/01/2014 21:55

I don't having vaginal births makes any difference. All of mine were VBs, both my coil fittings were post-babies, and both were very unpleasant. I was faint and shakey for several hours after each one.

Assume nothing!

If the meetings are important, then rearrange the coil fitting. Though, as its better to have the coil fitted during your period (perhaps that's why mine were so unpleasant - I wasn't 'on'), it might be easier to rearrange the meetings.

Crowler · 29/01/2014 21:56

It hurts like a motherfucker but you can carry on afterwards.

OatcakeCravings · 29/01/2014 22:12

Thanks for all the feedback, meetings not important really but boss is....um....'difficult' and as meeting already in diary he is likely to be arsy about it. Only a couple of Drs at the practice do it and there has to be a nurse present so it's quite difficult to get an appointment. And I need this to sort my periods out, I can't have another one like last month!

I've had it done over lunch break both times, taken ibuprofen 30 mins before and sat for 15 mins in surgery afterwards, then walked back to the office and worked away for the afternoon. Same for smears. I find it hits more that evening, that I need to not be on dinner duty and take it easy. But work is fine.

moanstripes · 29/01/2014 22:19

I've had three Mirenas and I've never had any issues with continuing as usual after mine. The surgery has insisted that I sit there for 15 mins afterwards but I don't feel any need to. Don't get any cramping at all.

HarderToKidnap · 29/01/2014 22:24

First one I had a vasovagal, fell in a ditch and was basically out of it for a day. Second one was fine.

HarderToKidnap · 29/01/2014 22:25

The being out of it was due to the vasovagal, not the ditch fall!

FrumiousBandersnatch · 29/01/2014 22:38

It's not so much the pain, as how you'll react to your cervix being opened. Some people pass out, but this is unlikely if you've had a vaginal birth.

I bloody loved my mirena and only had it out to conceive DD.

Afritutu · 29/01/2014 22:41

I had one post 2 children (normal deliveries), was wobbly for about 10 mins, went straight to station bought a coffee and went straight to work no problems. Pain killers for some lift cramps. All fine.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 29/01/2014 23:02

In that case Mirena trumps work.

You may be fine. No way of knowing.

NoelOfLorst · 29/01/2014 23:57

I was fine Revolting but thanks for asking Smile it was about 5 weeks after being put in and I was bleeding. Had an almighty cramp, a bit of a 'erk wassat?!' moment, and voila! There it appeared.

plutarch14 · 30/01/2014 00:03

I have not had a vaginal birth but I went straight back to work after mine, no choice, I had an important meeting. The insertion was painful (sorry) and I passed out but once it was over it was over and I didn't feel too achey.

Applecrabs · 30/01/2014 00:08

I've had 3 now, with varying experiences. Saying that, it was never that bad that I couldn't go to work afterwards. I also suffered with awful periods and the coil fitting is preferable. Take some ibuprofen before hand.
The relief of not having periods is definitely worth a few hours of discomfort!!
I understand what you say about your boss, I've been in the same situation, it would be nicer to go home to bed with a cup of tea but that's easier said than done! Good luck, OP.

foreverondiet · 30/01/2014 00:21

Yes would be fine. Maybe have paracetamol and Nurofen in your bag just in case.

ToomuchIsBackOnBootcamp · 30/01/2014 00:26

A bit off tangent of your actual question but Wanted to just warn you OP the effect of the coil may not be immediate. I had one fitted after DS and it was fine, no problem on the day except a bit crampy (less than period pain) a few days light bleeding then my periods got much lighter after the first month. Great I thought, perfect for me.

That was about 6 years ago. Had it removed for a while then decided to get it done again recently to relieve heavy bleeding. This time it was much more painful insertion and I've had 4 very heavy "periods" in the 7 weeks since insertion. Doc has said to wait another month or two before making a decision as it often takes 3/4 cycles for the effect to kick in. Just to warn you as you said "can't have another one like last month" - you may have just as heavy periods for a bit longer than you'd like. I really hope you have an experience more like my first one though!

DamnBamboo · 30/01/2014 00:30

You'll be fine

DrNick · 30/01/2014 00:50

Sure

GrumpyInYorkshire · 30/01/2014 06:33

I just carried on as normal afterwards. Had cramps that felt like a really heavy period for around an hour, but that was it.

SingingGerbil · 30/01/2014 08:29

I was in a lot of pain after mine and felt quite faint for about 30 mins. Didn't go into work as planned. This was my 3rd one and I don't remember feeling like that after the other two.

Balaboosta · 30/01/2014 08:36

You can go to work, in the way that you "can" do anything if you have to, but I wouldn't want to. I felt sore and a bit battered. It was quite painful getting the old one out and it took several members of staff to prod around inside me. no biggie but I felt the need for a cup of tea and a lie-down to recover.

bringonyourwreckingball · 30/01/2014 08:37

I felt a bit wobbly and had to sit down for a while after mine but it wasn't straightforward as I have an odd cervix. If it all goes smoothly you should be fine

Balaboosta · 30/01/2014 08:39

IMO you would be perfectly right to take a few hours off afterwards.

Catbert4pm · 30/01/2014 08:40

So painful first attempt was abandoned and rebooked at hospital under general anaesthetic Blush
