Mouthwash destroys headlice...

Just read some tips on other uses for mouthwash! One of the commenter's tips was to soak head with mouthwash - I'm presuming it's alcohol based mouthwash - and apparently the eggs and lice will just rinse from the hair. Then I presume use lots of cheap conditioner to comb through the hair and then finally wash. I haven't tried it yet but can see the logic in killing the lice with an astringent. I prefer prevention and use Vosene anti-lice shampoo as a regular shampoo. My son is 10 and is yet to come home with head lice - touch wood!!!

Why would they want to smell like a great big Polo head?

Cookethenook · 29/01/2014 18:08

I'm pretty sure corsodyl would kill anything!

I have resorted to using listerine on them when everything else failed. You need to use the original yellow one as the blue can send blondes green. I think I soaked their hair wrapped it in cling film for an hour and then combed and washed as normal.

The other thing I have used is Neem oil which smelt of sulphur and garlic.

Did discover listerine was originally a floor wash.

wouldn't write off nits yet op - my boy is 12 with his first ever case of them. got the little buggers at senior schoolShock and has kindly passed them to his three smaller sisters. he has really curly hair so challenging to treat.

EdithWeston · 29/01/2014 18:32

OP: I think you'll find that it's the 'lots of conditioner and comb' bit of the advice that actually deals with the nits.

RudolphtheRedknowsraindear · 29/01/2014 18:56

Errr, head lice in the mouth! Grin

BucketsnSpades · 29/01/2014 19:02

I discovered that blasting them with 230 degrees of ghd helped when my DC gave them to me this Christmas, sadly i couldn't really use that method on their delicate heads so resorted to two weeks of daily combing. I hate the little critters with a passion. The nits i mean not the DC.

MsUumellmahaye · 29/01/2014 19:04

exactly why i wouldn't use mouthwash :)

Iwannalaylikethisforever · 29/01/2014 19:06

I'm using derbac this evening. If the little bastards are still moving tomorrow I'm getting a gallon of listerine.
Edith I agree conditioner and comb works very well but daughters waist length hair would take me until morning.
I bloody well wish people would check the children's hair. The teacher put a notice up "head lice about" ages ago.

Swampy. Yes I made the mistake a few years ago if thinking it was the girls passing the headline around but when I checked my son, 10 at the time he had them!

Innocentbystander01 · 29/01/2014 19:09

According to Pinterest if you soak your feet in listerine for 20 minutes any hard skin just wipes off.

IneedAsockamnesty · 29/01/2014 19:11

It's also handy for treating some hoof infections in horses

IneedAsockamnesty · 29/01/2014 19:12

Iwanna,

If you not also combing then you could be one of those parents that gets moaned about

PatriciaHolm · 29/01/2014 19:13

It would appear that listerine is the liquid equivalent to baby wipes - essentially napalm in a packet, capable of clearing anything and everything from its wake. Slightly terrifying when you consider wiping it on a babies bum/gargling it though….

MrsCharlesBrandon · 29/01/2014 19:18

I've used listerine on headlice before. soak hair, cover with a shower cap and leave to dry, wash out. Worked for my girls.
